Phil Morrison

Phil Morrison was awarded the modified win at Charlotte Saturday night after being spun into the infield after contact by the #61 on the last lap of the 35 lap feature. Though Morrison never crossed the finish line, officials determined he was the winner by reverting to the last complete lap.

Awarded second was Tony Carreno in the #61. He was arguing his case with support from other drivers long after the race was over.

Though i’m not a fan of last lap bazai moves…how do you give a win to a car that didn’t finish? A little biased don’t you think? If you wanted to protect the leader you throw caution , line em back up and throw green/white together and then checker to finish the last lap. A win was given to a car in the infield in an incomplete race…as i read it.
I wasn’t there.

If it was a complete race ( stating race was finished but reverted to last lap???) i still don’t get that one…the car in the infield would be LAST.

just my obsevation of the finish, they were comming out of 4, the checker was already out, the 71 of Skaggs (2nd place) spun the leader, the (3rd) 61 of Carreno crossed the line first. Some drivers slowed down to avoid a wreck , some raced to the line, switching some positions around, Morrison did cross the line 5th. As to be fair, as fair can be in racing, they went back to the last lap, put the 71 to the rear, and there ya have it.

If the checkered flag was waving they should have finished the way they crossed the line…i can see why the car who crossed the line 1st wanted to argue. You said your call was fair…fair to Morrison only…you slapped all the other drivers in the FACE! There YOU have it!

Wow

I’ve been around since wagon trains and this deal is a first.

The first man across the line WASN"T awarded the win?

Keep this one on file - doubt you will ever see it happen again in this lifetime.

Something similar happened at Hialeah. A race leader spun, or got spun, coming off turn four for the WHITE flag. The race stayed green for the final lap, and then the win was awarded to the guy who spun one lap short.

By the way, the starter was the BROTHER of the leader that spun, so everyone was very pleased with the outcome. This was in 1990 or so.

If you went back to the last lap that means you still have one lap to go…

The flagman had the checkerd flag waiving when they crossed the line. To me that made the 61 the winner. I’ve seen a hundred races where the leaders tangle on the last lap and the third place guy gets the win. The only reason the call was changed (in my openion) is because the 63 pulled down to the winners circle in protest. I have been running in third many times, whaching the leaders mixing it up, and just hoping they get together enough for me to pass them for the win. If the flagman had thrown the yellow, it would have made for a better result. Why they put the yellow flag down on the white flag lap amazes me. I think sometimes they throw the checkered just because it’s the only flag in their hand.

I agree with you

The Real Winner!

Racing- The first person to the checkered flag WINS! not the 5th, not the last, not the person in the infield. Racing is racing you cant change the rules as you go. You win some, You lose some… its not a sport that if you lose and complain your declared winner! Last lap turn 4… Morrison brake checks #71 of Skaggs… cars tangle, 3rd place Carreno #61 crosses the line to take the checkered. Track officials make an unheard of in the history of racing call by declaring a care who CAUSED the wreck the win, and taking #61 of Carreno’s win away. Nascar winston cup champions dont make a living racing because they park there cars in the infield. They cross the line FIRST!
#71 Skaggs- your car was fast all night without a doubt… sorry about your wreck and i hope to see you back next race.
MORRISON-good job winning a race you didnt finish! keep driving like your driving destroying cars that are faster than yours…
#61 Carreno- Congrats on your WIN, that was taken away from you… the fans and specs at Charlotte County SEEN who crossed the line FIRST no matter what kinds of ridiculous call the officials made… hope to see you back to win another one!

Racing is racing you dont make the rules up as you go! the winner is whoever gets to the checkered flag first! Officials made an unheard of in the history of racing calls by declaring a car who CAUSED the wreck the winner. #61 of carreno won FAIR AND SQUARE. so to be fair as fair can be in racing DONT TAKE THE WIN AWAY FROM THE WINNER! he ran on the last lap till he crossed the finish line, thats what your suppose to do!

Also from Hialeah, in a super late model race, the leader had a clutch slipping, second place got in to him and got him loose going into the third turn. He never went passed 45 degrees loose, did not spin, did not stop, just got sideways. They throw the caution, put the leader to the rear for bring out the caution, even though he never spun, never stopped, and didn’t even loss one spot on the track. He finished about 6th. After the race, they said, “We made a mistake”, and they gave him a half win. They had two winner for that race. One crossed the line first, they other sixth or so. Needless to say, everyone was “oh so happy” with the call. Now that was about the weirdest night I can remember. I’m surprised they didn’t cut the trophy in half.

Phil Morrison is an a** and so is his crew. He put us in the wall a few years ago at DeSoto and then as we were loading up and he was leaving his crew leaned out the window pointed to us and laughed as we were putting our busted up car on the trailer.
