Do you know your Nascar sponsors?

Does anybody know who sponsored Jimmy Lee Capps. I can’t find it anywhere.

A/C DELCO car, i think, was driven by Fort Wayne’s Steve Chistman in the late '80’s early '90’s for a brief time, don’t know who the Team Owner was.
Currently drives a Mod and/or a Truck in the midwest…still around.

I found who sponsored Jimmy Lee Capps. I was looking through my older programs. I didn’t realize it was 1976 when he had Gary’s Gaurd and 1977 and "78 when he had Herhe Produce. Jimmy Is from Jax, fl.

O.K I will give you one.

Norris Industries… Bobby Allison

Jerry…

Check this out…might stay up tonite and scan in some stuff from that stack of mags I told you about.

And I had it wrong…it’s CRC…not CNC. Duh…
Here’s the answers I was looking for, but again, I can’t be positive I’m right either:

The original Skoal Bandit, was Stan Barret in the #22 car, co-owned by Burt Reynolds among others. Hence the “Bandit” part of the team name. Harry came along as a team driver to help get the whole program up to speed.

Sunoco was first with Charlie Rudolph, a NY Modified racer. He is the son of Jim, an accomplished racer of his own, and the father of Erick who is quickly making a name for himself in the Northeast.

Mark Martin first came South with Apache Stoves on the side of his cars. I think Apache also made an appearance with Dave Marcis.

Kellogg’s came to Atlanta with Chuck Bown & Tex Powell when they were testing the Nascar waters.

Interstate Batteries (Powertron) was with Stanley Smith. A lot of people remember the Talladega crash when Jimmy Horton flew right out of the ballpark, but not many know that Stanley had severe head injuries in the same crash, and almost didn’t make it. Fortunately he is back, and recently ran at Lakeland.

Alan Kulwicki first showed up in a Bill Terry owned #35 with Quincy’s Steak House colors. After missing Daytona, and Richmond had qualifying rained out (field lined up by points, and he had none after Daytona), he decided to go on his own. I believe this was the only time Alan ever ran for an “owner” besides himself.

Texaco… I could be wrong about this, but I do remember Janet Guthrie running a White & Red Texaco car, possibly #82. This was after the Green & White 68 Kelly Girl cars.

Texaco Diesel… again the details are sketchy, but somewhere I have a picture of that car, and I’m pretty sure it was Jeremy Mayfield. He was driving for the Sadler Brothers team (Earl & Check… not Hermie & Elliott) in the ARCA series at the time. The Sadler also entered a handful of Cup races a year with their ARCA stuff. I think Jeremy was only 17 at the time.

Piedmont Airlines was with Richard Childress and his new driver Ricky Rudd, when Dale Earnhardt left, took Wrangler with him, and wound up in the Bud Moore 15. This might have been the only stretch that Dale ever drove a Ford product.

Pepsi Cola… I was thinking Tiny Lund, as I saw him in 1970 with that sponsor, but I believe AncrDave schooled me on this one. I now go with Roy Tyner. Another piece of history about Roy Tyner is that he was the subject of the Jim Croce song “Rapid Roy, The Stock Car Boy”. I also heard his fast lifestyle wound up getting him murdered along the way by someone who felt Roy did him wrong. The detalis of that story I don’t recall.

Publix was on the side of Junie Donlaveys #90 at Atlanta when the Ford Motor Company wanted to give some seat time to one of their “protoge’s”, a Desert racer named Robby Gordon. Junie was called on a lot of times by Ford to give their “factory” guys a chance. Others included Kenny Schrader and Dorsey Schroeder.

Dupont will forever be linked to Jeff Gordon, but the first driver was Ricky Craven in the Busch series, driving a Purple #99.

Jasper Engines, one of the largest engine rebuilders in the country, first appeared with Ken Ragan, father of David Ragan. He ran some ARCA & some Cup races with the #74 & #77 cars.

Thanks for playing along. If you want more, let me know!
Well lets see… Accordinig to “www.legends of nascar.com”… Roy Tyner died in 1989 after being shot in his truck, and then the truck was set afire…

Little tidbit that I hadn’t noticed…

Coincedently…

Roy Tyner was also the first Native American to drive in the Busch Series, SCR Magazine–Circa 1969

Norris Industries … already been guessed, Bobby Allison in the Bud Moore 15
1st National City Travelers Checks … several drievr, but the one I most connect is Benny Parsons
Truxmore… I always think of Bill Dennis, but not sure he was the first one.
Shoney’s… wow! Gonna have to give this some thought. I do own a Shoney’s/Sterling Marlin T-Shirt, but that was strictly for his Nashville LM.
Dahlonega Ford Sales … has to be Bill Elliott
Krystal … Never knew they were involved at all. No guess
Transmissions Unlimited … same for this one. No clue
Armor All… Neil Bonnet in the JD Stacy #5

A few more:

Eureka Vacuum Cleaners
Northwestern Security Life
Lifebouy
Slender You
Auto Bell Car Wash
Dow Chemical
Keystone Beer
Chatanooga Chew
Midwest Transport
Heilig-Meyers Furniture

Transmissions Unlimited - Dave Marcis
Lifebouy - Dave Marcis again? Trevor Boys perhaps?
Keystone Beer - Wally Dallenbach
Heilig-Meyers Furniture - Bobby Hillin Jr.

Some answers from earlier:

Eureka Vacuum Cleaners… Jimmy Means

Dirt-Devil Vacuum Cleaners… Kenny Wallace

Glad Trash Bags… Sammy Swindell, driving the Dick Moroso car after Rob’s death. I think it was a one-time-only ride at Daytona.

Days Inn Hotels… Mickey Gibbs, in a Sam McMahon owned car. McMahon was convicted in a money skimming scam and went to the pokey. He also owed “Team III” that also ran as a #24.

Masters Inn… Delma Cowart, who is famous for the quote “We ain’t never won a race, but we ain’t never lost a party!”

Jackaroo BBQ Sauce… Jeff Purvis

SPAM… Lake Speed

Alka-Seltzer… Jimmy Means again

Evinrude Outboards Motors… Jim Sauter

Winners Circle Auto Parts… Morgan Shephard, black & silver #97. This team was co-owned by Maurice Petty. His partner (can’t remember his name) was convicted of something or other and spent time in the big house also. This same sponsor was also behind Bobby Labontes first BGN car, #44 also black & silver

Pannill Knits… who could forget Buddy Arrington. He was also the last person to race a Dodge in Cup (prior to their return), and his Dodge Magnum #67 is in the Museum in Talladega (or was it Darlington?)

Coats & Clark… They are, of all things, a sewing thread manufacturer. Dale Jarrett, in an 18 car, drove this car, but it’s not the Gibbs team with the same number

Freedlander… Tommy Ellis. Eric Freedlander was another who crossed the line and found himself snuggled up to someone named “Hacksaw”

Bull Frog Knits… I thought Buddy Baker, but the other guess of Lake Speed, in Hoss Ellingtons #1 is probably right.

Crisco… Buddy Baker did drive this car first. I still consider it one of the best looking racecars I’ve ever seen. What a beautiful car that was!

Quote from Osmosis Jones:

“Kings Inn was on Roger Hambys #17…don’t know if he was the first.”

I think you’re right Matt… I was thinking of King’s ROW, not Inn. They were a full-time sponsor for Benny Parsons white & gold #72, but there was a contest held by Gater Racing News that awarded a “Grand National” ride at Pocono for a few years. I have a photo somewhere of Jan Opperman in the Parson’s team car, numbered 77 for this race, running side by side with Kenny Brightbill who won a ride in the Walter Ballard #30. A different year also saw Carl “Fuzzy” Van Horn in a one-off ride, and later on Tighe Scott ran quite a few races in the Ballard 30. If not for a late caution in the Daytona 500, Scott may have won. I believe he wound up with a 6th place finish if my memory is anywhere close!

Frassin did pretty good with!

Truxmore I was thinking was…Dick Brooks in a Junie #90 Mercury
Shoney’s… Dave Marcis
Krystal… Grant Adcox
Transmision Unlimited… Cecil Gorden

Wasn’t Truxmore on the Donlavey car when Bill Dennis drove it at Daytona in the late '60s - early '70s?

Norris Industries - I thought that was on the Bud Moore Torino (it was actually a '76 Gran Torino if I recall) when Buddy Baker was driving it in about '76, '77, or '78; I have an 8x10 of that car in one of my photo albums somewheres…

Dow - I wanna say was on the 99 winged Dodge that won the first Talladega race in 1969 with Richard Brickhouse driving. Can’t be sure of who the owner was, though…weren’t they also on Ricky Craven’s purple #99 before DuPont came along?

Olympia Beer was Hershel McGriff’s longtime sponsor out west; he ran several of the California NASCAR races at Riverside.

Terminal Transport would probably be Richie Bickle’s #45 car; I have a 8x10 of that car along with the #5 Late Model at Nashville. I think that Waltrip’s sponsor his rookie year was “Terminal Trucking”, not sure if it is or was the same group, just a different name.

Carling Black Label was on the #92 1973(?) Rookie of the Year, Earl Smith (?; I think it was “Smith” - never mind; I just seen that Frasson118 ahd answered that one already…LOL…it’s Earl ROSS); at the time he was the first Canadian to win Rookie and actually won at Martinsville that year I believe, or something like that. Then Carling went to Cale Yarborough and Junior Johnson’s team.

yer both right…sorta.

Larry Smith had Carling the year after he won Rookie of the Year (1972). Unfortunately, he was killed in a crash at Talladega that year.

I thought I had seen someone ask about Sta-Power but not sure…they were Bud Moore’s sponsor when Bobby Isaac was driving…before Buddy and Bobby…
Dang, they sure played musical cars back then a lot.

Hershel McGriff did have Olympia but Elder was first, I believe…

And Waltrip’s sponsor was Terminal Transport same as Bickle and Gill and a few others in the Late Models…looking for a picture of it…and here it is…

Maybe they were Terminal Trucking…not sure but I think all of them said Terminal Transport…

Yep…Bickle and Gill’s sponsor was Terminal Trucking…oh well…as seen here:

Dave “La Machine” Westerman…

Earlier I said I thought Coke was with someone else before it was on Allison’s Junior Johnson owned Chevies and I was right…except that it was on Allison’s Holman and Moody owned Ford products…Mr. Westerman knew the right answer…all hail “La Machine”…this is a scan from the back of an old SCR…

I’ll start a new thread with some more of these old photos…

Ya’ll want to see more of the scans from the SCR’s of my youth?

Picture 1…guess who he is…
Picture 2…One of the driver’s mentioned earlier…Ramo Stott…a very happy guy
Picture 3…one of my favorite victory lane moments…“How you doin?” …If ya can’t read the name it’s Ray Elder (pre-Olympia) looking for his lost keys…lol

Jimmy,

I standed corrected about Norris Industries. I didn’t go back far enough. In 1975 Bud Moore had Bud Moore Engineering on the #15 car with Buddy Baker than 1976 they got Norris on the #15 car and Buddy drove it in '76-'77 than Bobby Allison drove it in '78. In '79 Bud had Hodgdon / Moore on the #15.

What about,

Burger King
Encyclopedia Britannica

Citicorp with Junior Johnsons’ #11 Cale Yarborough driving.Junies’ Truxmore sponsered ford had Jody Ridley for their only win.Mcgriiff and Olympia Beer went to LeMans and raced a Dodge Charger.Chattanoga Chew and David Pearson in the early 80’s.Keystone and Wally Dallenbach at Roush.

O. J. that would be…

…“The Tampa Terror” Will Cagle.
