If ther is a 3 day ticket avalible for advanced purchase at a reasonable price i’ll make the trip from NC.

Sounds like a good weekend for the tent, a grill, and a cooler full of suds!

Is that the same weekend as the Govenor’s Cup?

I hate to see the track in Lakeland shut down but maybe this will help y’all’s track bring in more big races. I really like SGMP and hope y’all success.

The 2008 version of the Gov. Cup at New Smyrna Speedway is Sat. night Nov. 22’nd. Right smack-dab in the middle of the SGMP biggie.
Gonna have to choose, or try to hit them both.

Now not only are owners/promoters( I use the term loosely), in FLorida stepping on each other, now the folks in Georgia are joining in. While I commend SGMP on having a big purse race, the week before or after the Gov cup wouldn’t have worked? Maybe had the winner of one of the races get automatic entry into the other? Now one of them will suffer and it probably will be the gov cup because of the payout.

Maybe in the future they could include another track on Friday and make another real Triple Crown. Each race 10 grand to win and another 10 grand if you win all three. Maybe even a little points fund for the top 5 combined points. Or…maybe they could include the Snowball and run it 3 consecutive weekends???

Just my two cents…

At 250 mile apart i don’t think it will hurt the guys who stay local, but, it WILL grab the guys driving down south for a winter race.

I quoted the most valuable part of your statement to me. PAYOUT.

I would like nothing more than to see promoters (clear throat) track owners go out and get the sponsors and large purse and actually compete against each other with large monthly shows.

weekly racing i think there should be a little co-operation but only within 100 sq miles.

If a track offers 10’000k to win and a large spread he will get most of the cars, but the track who offers 5’000k to win with a large spread through the field will get the guys who don’t want to drive as far, ie; rewarding the local guys.

One track would be a little shy that sat night that month but will win all the drivers over with his large purse next month.

Hell, a few weeks ago i went to a TUESDAY night race at a dirt track up here and there were more people in the stands than a regular sat night.

And a bunch of cars, done around midnight, ON A WEEKDAY-WORKDAY and myself nor anyone else complained.

I see comments on message boards people complaining about getting home @ 12:30 on sat night.

I’m completely lost on that one.

P.S. I’m not a promoter nor have what i believe it takes to be one.

If i can think up things like this IMAGINE what the pros could come up with.

It could still work if both tracks had single day shows (won’t happen), with NSS running on Saturday night and SGMP on Sunday afternoon. Problem is, these guys would rather spend thousands practicing, and perfecting the cars to the point that any half-assed driver could keep it in a straight line. If each track limited track time to a 2 hour session, day of race only, both shows could pull more cars.

I bet you could pull some Northern racers to this, like Eddie Hoffman, Scott Hantz, Mike and Ben Rowe, and a dozen more, if they could run 2 shows (about 400 laps) with a chance of bringing home a nice check.

Benny mentioned a Tuesday night show. I assume it was one of Ray Cooks Summernationals shows. These guys ran about 7 shows, in 8 or 9 nights at different tracks each time… different sizes, different banking, different gearing… NONE of those guys needed a practice day! The UMP Summernationals run 28 tracks in 31 days… again, NONE of them have a practice day!

Too many practice days, and too much track time is killing the competition side of asphalt racing. Limit that time down, and you’ll see better racing, and more guys willing to travel to more than 2 shows per month.

That would be it.

And every event hosted regular divisions as well.

All classes had strong fields. wish i could have caught the whole series but work wouldn’t allow me to.:frowning:

As Jerry has mentioned many times before, special weekday shows are/were common in the NE. Almost always a packed house. I just don’t understand why they don’t do it here. I’ve also wondered why there isn’t more racing in the “winter” than there now is. Maybe the holidays have something to do with it.

BTW, Benny I assume you meant a radius of 100 miles and not 100 square miles.

Another bad thing about this…

With the Snowball being such a premiere race it doesn’t make sense to me to run so many big races so close. You don’t give the teams any time to repair any damage. I think the Gov Cup is a week to close as it is but to run that many races that close together isn’t good. Just my two cents. We need to work together or we will lose more. RIP Lakeland.
