Waycross dirt/asphalt?

Well I am home and about dead. These wild week-ends will kill an old man.
I had my first experience on an oil based dirt track. Waycross is as hard as asphalt. Well all most, I saw some awesome racing, but not like clay. There didn’t seem to be near as much passing, and the pile ups were wprse it seemed. In our feature we had a 7 or 8 car pile up on lap 1 turn 1. What a mess. I think we lost a couple cars there. Afew laps in we had another similar mess in turn 4. I am not sure if the track had anything to do with those or not. I’ll have to look at the video and see if I can tell. I have never seen a dirt track use a blower, but I did now. We had another rain delay. third show in a row with rain. Our feature got done about 1:30 am but the pit is on the infield so I got stuck on the outside and couldn’t get to my truck till they ran their Street Stock race. Then I got inside and couldn’t get out to go to my hotel. So much for an early night. I hit the bed about 4:30. I think what I need is a slide in camper on my truck. Then I can just sack out and sleep at the track. Then get up and drive home at my leasure. Anybody know where I can find one cheap? I enjoyed the week-end despite my gripping. I am having the time of my life. I just wish I could talk my wife into going with me agin. She got burned out about 15 years ago. Oh welll. Bob…

I went there years ago for a Southern Allstars show. I was sure i was at the wrong place when I arrived. Was certainly shocked by the surface. Ronnie Johnson smoked them off the pole and never looked back. The place was murder on tires. We were peppered by rubber all night long. I sat next to a car owner who was adament he would never return. Glad I saw it, but it was a “one time” track for me.

Yea backrow, I think a lot of people thought that. I don’t understand why they don’t take it up and put clay down. I am sure the epa won’t let them put oil down any more. They need to do something about the lighting. Some of the drivers were saying they couldn’t see well coming down the back straight. I can attest to that. My camera is good in low light but it didn’t pick up the back too good. I was told tonight that the cars comin out of turn 4 to start a race can’t see the starter from where they are allowed to fire. Now thats scary. I don’t want to pick them apart because the racing was good but it could be better. A lot of those thing were a factor in our car count. We have had 40 + cars at each show till Waycross and a bunch of guys didn’t want to go there becase of the surface and that it was supposed to be wicked fast. It was pretty fast, Johnny Collins set fast time at 16.65 or so. The closest other car was 16.92. Now thats picking them up and setting them down for 1/2 mile track. Bob…

“it’s a place to test your testicle fortitude” was just one of the gems from Shan Smith, driver of the 17SS dirt late model on Monday night’s IFR.

If you want some dirt racin humor, you gotta check out the interview with Shan. It is a hilarious look back at his Waycross experience. LINK!
