Burt Myers vs. Junior Miller

I don’t know how to give you the link, go to youtube.com and type in Burt Myers vs. Junior Miller. It’s from Bowman Gray Stadium in N.C. Look at the size of the crowd in the grandstands! Asphalt racing is alive and well in some places!

And from reading further there was 102 cars that raced the feature that night in only 4 divisions. stadium stock (mini stock) was split into 2 races . one 24 car race and a 15 car race. 44 cars in the Ministock division.

What does that mean you ask. They dont have 9 v8 divisions and a mini 4 cylinder latemodel division. the rules for the stock divisions is pretty close to stock. Even my mini stock is too advanced by their rules and Im out in left field compared to FASCAR rules.

You do the math.

Oh and dont say it has anything to do with money. The 24 car field of minis was paid 160 to win

The 15 car field was paid 105 to win. The street stocks were paid 160 to win. 560 to win the sportsman. Thats less payout than most tracks I have even been to. I got paid 200 to win a 9 car ministock race at Watermelon Capital Speedway in april.

Payout by division and position at the link.

Slinger Speedway in Wisconsin running a Tuesday night race:

and don’t tell me it’s “different up north”. there are poorly run tracks all over the place up there. South Bend Speedway shut down a couple of years ago, Thunder Valley in Jones Michigan took it in the shorts from the economy this year and Mottville Michigan is just an embarassing dump that will probably survive forever.

that doesn’t keep places like Slinger and Kalamazoo and New Paris from thriving.

Where have you guys been. If you will go to www.southernmotoracing.com you will see all the action from Bowman Gray Stadium and the Whelen Southern Modified Tour. That site is run by a KARNAC associate.
It also has a message board which is:
http://www.realracinusa.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=16 or can be found as Southern Motor Racing right here on Real Racing.
If you go to the site at www.southernmotoracing.com then you can click on at the top of a recent Real Racin USA show that had the promoter of Bowman Gray Stadium on it.
This track is the oldest track in NASCAR and has 8 to 11 thousand week in and week out. In fact just a few weeks ago they attracted 17 thousand on a ladies night.
I’m enclosing a recent picture of the stadium and it doesn’t include the fans coming off of turn 2. This is proof of 8-11K on this night.
So racing is still very popular in NC.
Yes they have fields of over 120 each week. Some classes such as the modifieds , have had to send cars home.
The stadium stock class has this many cars each week. The top 24 in points gets to start the A race and the other half or cars left over get to run the second race. They have o race a 50 lapper that pays 500 to win. Only the fastest in time trials makes that race however those who dont qualify get to start the second race.
The Myers/Miller clash this past weekend is only a part of what goes on over there. In fact a Myers/Miller clash over there about a month ago resulted in Miller being suspended for one race.
About 4 races ago two street stock racers got out of their cars and had an absolute brawl and that too made it on you tube. Both were arrested and handcuffed in front of the 11K crowd and charged with affray. One of those charged was a firefighter for the city. That fight with a picture is still listed on our message board.
As for this past weekend, Myers/Miller were penalized with just a slap on the wrist. Why you say? Because they draw crowds. They sell tickets.
They both are now going to be on probation for the 2009 season. Both will have to post a 1000.00 bond for the whole season. If they clash, and they will, then they forfeit the bond. So in other words, the 2009 champion at Bowman Gray will be 2K richer next year as the bond goes towards the championship points race.
