I saw this this morning in our local on-line Florida Today paper. This poor mother did not realize she was hurting her child but today’s economy forced her to add more water than needed to her baby’s bottle just so she could get by for the month. We seem to help every Tom, Dick, and Harry but our own. There are many people today living week by week and some day by day. My grandson also gets WIC and most of the time the 8 cans of powder formula is not enough but his formula is $30.00 a can and that is sometimes a day work for some. Just sad that we don’t take better care of our own sometimes.
Watered-down formula almost kills Tampa tot
ASSOCIATED PRESS ? December 2, 2008
TAMPA ? A Tampa hospital is cautioning cash-strapped parents against watering down baby formula, after a 5-month-old almost died from the money-saving strategy.
La?Damian Barton was hospitalized last week after he had a seizure and stopped breathing. Doctors diagnosed him with water intoxication and malnourisnment. He?s expected to be released Tuesday.
His mother, 23-year-old Jeri Moss, says she had no idea adding the extra water was dangerous. She was trying to stretch the allotment of baby formula cans she receives each month from the federal WIC program for low-income families. The technical college student says she couldn?t afford to buy more.
Cindy Morris, an official with the Hillsborough County Health Department, says WIC isn?t intended to cover all a child?s nutritional needs.
More like she didn’t care.
We seem to help every Tom, Dick, and Harry but our own.
Nope…i’ve always taken care of myself.
Just sad that we don’t take better care of our own sometimes.
How much more free money and food should be handed out? we’ve been rewarding laziness for years now.

Gee mom must have not tried watering HER food down though.
The technical college student says she couldn?t afford to buy more.
That statement alone torques me!
I see a single mom living in low income housing, state is probably paying for the school, she gets wic and who knows what else but the baby is the only one suffering due to watered down formula…hmmmmmm? Why isn’t this woman in jail?
Jane, you seem very compassionate to your fellow man but come on…"this poor woman?
I have 3 kids that are 18, 14 and 4. I have NEVER had any agency help.NEVER filed for unemployment and i’m 42 yrs old.
I came out of high school and right to work with no experience.
I am, nor was no different or better off than all the people who want to sit on their FAT ASS and have everything handed to them instead of getting a job, applying one’s self and actually become successful.
Watering down baby formula to save money? I can think of 10 things in her daily life to go without so she’d have food for the little one.
You kinda see how the kid rates…huh?
She pleaded ignorance to stay out of jail and maybe work in a higher allowance or get a bigger check.
LOCK HER ASS UP NOW AND TAKE THE KID!!!
best thing that can come out of this story.
P.S.
This rant does not include the physical or mentally disabled people who need some assistance due to not being ABLE to work.
