The entries continue to roll in from several areas for the upcoming Florida Figure 8 Championship. The latest location has a pair of high-level drivers aiming at the Auburndale Speedway from February 12th to the 15th, 2009. The Southern Indiana/Northern Kentucky area has always shined on the Figure 8 map with a long list of legendary names. Jeffersonville, Indiana?s Leonard Basham and Shepherdsville, Kentucky?s Tony Anderson are just two of those set for joining this competition.
1988 World Figure 8? Champion Leonard Basham is prominent in the record books at the Sportsdrome Speedway. His five track titles in the Modified Figure 8 division (1983, 1991, 1993, 1995, & 1996) are best along with the amount of victories in their biggest event, the Midwestern Championship. He has scored six wins in that the Nation?s second oldest Figure 8 race. And he stands alone atop the division?s all-time crossover contest victory list at the Sportsdrome.
Basham is no stranger to success outside of his home track. Aside from conquering the World Figure 8? event, he has many wins at the Indianapolis Speedrome. From an Outlaw feature triumph in 1980 to his various Late Model series checkered flags, Leonard has enjoyed the famous fifth-mile. He is also tops as best in qualifying race wins history on World Figure 8? weekend. He has furthermore earned feature trophies at the Louisville Motor Speedway and the Kil-Kare Speedway in Ohio. Basham is in many Floridians minds after a spectacular 30-minute duel with Wayne Arnold in 1994 at the Sunshine Speedway.
Tony ?the Hitman? Anderson is known as one of the best big event drivers in his area. The 1999 and 2001 Sportsdrome Ironman Two-Hour Figure 8 winner has in addition captured the Midwestern Figure 8 Championship in 2001. That historical magical season saw him snag nearly all the named races on his way to the track title. He was also the champion of their Outlaw Figure 8 division in 1999. Tony has additionally won features at the Charlestown and Kentucky Speedways.
Anderson spent many season competing at a high level at the now defunct Louisville Motor Speedway. The veteran was the first Figure 8 driver in track history to grab their Triple Crown of big events. He also was the winner in their longest crossover contest, the World 300. Tony has also been very strong in the World Figure 8? Championship at the Indianapolis Speedrome. He finished 4th in the 2000 and 2005 editions. Tony even won an amazing qualifying race in 2001 after not turning a single lap of practice that weekend. He comes to Florida driving the car Fred Bear Jr used to win the 2008 World Figure 8? Championship.
The Florida Figure 8 Championship is sanctioned by the World Figure 8? Racing Tour. It has dates set for February 12th to the 15th, 2009 at the Auburndale Speedway. These events evolved from the legendary World Figure 8? Championship held each year at the EDCO Welding Indianapolis Speedrome?. The $20,000 to win, 33rd Annual World Figure 8? Championship is September 10th to 12th, 2009.
