This Saturday night (August 8), the South East Champ Kart Series (formerly named the Desoto Champ Kart Series) will make it’s 4th stop of the 2009 season at Charlotte County Motorsports Park. The series will race at five tracks in Florida in 2009, including CCMP, Auburndale Speedway, Citrus County Speedway, Orlando Speedworld and Desoto.

A large field of entries (22-26) is expected. As a result, the series has decided to conduct a Lucky Fan contest for the kids.

At the SECKS driver’s meeting on Saturday, all of the champ kart racers will be asked to sign a small series decal, each writing his/her name and champ kart number on one decal. Prior to the feature, volunteers with the series will carry the signed decals into the grandstands, and up on the “hill” (where some fans sit in their lawn chairs), at Charlotte County Motorsports Park. We will allow each interested child to select one drivers decal. If that person selects the decal of the driver who wins the SECKS feature later that night, that lucky fan will receive $20 CASH! The series hopes that this might make the champ kart feature a little more exciting for the kids this Saturday night.

This Saturday will be STOP ON RED night at Charlotte County Motorsports Park. Traffic crashes are the single most significant cause of preventable death and injury in North America. In 2007 in the U.S., almost 900 people were killed and an estimated 153,000 were injured in crashes that involved red light running.

Attending the races to help give away the feature winners trophies will be Melissa Wandall and her daughter Madison.

Melissa is a local advocate for the STOP ON RED movement. Her husband Mark died on October 24, 2003.

Mark was just 30 when he was killed in an auto accident less than a mile from his Bradenton, Fla., home. He was the passenger in a car that was broadsided by a driver who ran a red light. He died less than a week after celebrating his first wedding anniversary and just 19 days before the birth of his daughter, Madison Grace.

Here is a video of Melissa, telling her story: http://lifehappens.org/reallifestories/wandall

Although you may consider yourself and your family members to be safe drivers, it?s important to remember NOT to accelerate your vehicle when you see the light turn green, until you have looked BOTH WAYS, to make sure that no one is running a red light. This is particularly critical when you are making a LEFT HAND TURN, as this maneuver results in the highest incidents involving fatalities.
