I was looking for info and a recommendation. I see quite a few cars at the tracks and on the “for sale” forums that have vinyl wraps. I have looked into this a bit for my car, and it seems a bit pricey. Can any of you guys give me an idea of what it should cost to wrap a late model, and who you would recommend that would do a decent job at a fair price? Thanks in advance!
My recommendation would be a ‘half-wrap’… they can do it in one pass and still do quite a few neat things… should cost around $500 - $700 depending on the design and how intricate…
If I ever get a Vinyl Printer (as opposed to the cutter I have now) I will be in the ‘wrapping’ business…
One thing to look out for is ‘clipart’… there are literally hundreds of pre-existing files out there from companies like Aurora Graphics that people use and then claim they are original and want you to pay for the design… Some people have more money than talent and just because they can afford a nice $13k machine and some pricey DVD’s they think they are a ‘designer’…
Depending on the effect you’re looking for, sometimes it is cheaper to stay with solid colors and cut vinyl as opposed to the more expensive printed wraps and you can still get a very nice looking car!
Wraps are easier to do and maintain on dirt cars as opposed to asphalt Late Models just simply because you are dealing with flat panels… Half-wraps go up anywhere from a few to 30" along the side of the car which keeps the labor cheaper because you are not trying to wrap around curved fenders and such.
BIGGEST piece of advice is to know what you want… Don’t just let someone do what they want on YOUR racecar… Be vocal and remember that at the end of the day… you are paying them and it is YOUR racecar not theirs.
(if I sound a little bitter I apologize… I’ve been a designer for 17 years and nothing pisses me off more than people with more money than talent that get business just because they can afford nicer/better equipment!)
Thanks for the info, Mark. The problem for me is in the case of my car, it needs either a full paint job, or a full wrap. At this point, it looks like the paint job will be cheaper, but I was curious what a full wrap would cost.
This car was painted with Rust-O-Leum fairly cheap and came out alright… (I wasn’t quite done with the vinyl when the photo was taken)
But this is an example of what you can do with some cheap paint and cut vinyl as opposed to a wrap.
.
I have seen that car in person, and it looks very nice for a low cost paint job! Was it sprayed on or brushed on? Could you do those graphics for me?
hey joe check out wicked race desings or call brain at 904-845-8022 he does good work
Ok, thanks!
One car that appeared to be fully wrapped and absolutely gorgeous that raced at Auburndale this year was Kyle Hall’s #17 Street Stock… would like to know who did the work because the car has a “beach scene” paint job…

Thanks so much for all the info!
Jacko241- I sprayed that car with Sunrise Red Rust-olem straight from Home Depot. It cost me about $30.00 for 1 gallon and it did 3 coats. As for the vinyl, Mark is the man for the job- He does awesome work!
Thanks for the info, best17. You guys did a great job, your car looks very nice! Did you use an air sprayer, and what kind and how much reducer did you use? I guess you can tell I am not a paint guy, lol.
Yes i used an air sprayer. I bought it at Home Depot also for $85.00. It is a Husky kit with 2 guns. As for the reducer, i used paint thinner. The consistancy that you need can be tricky. You want it thin enough that your gun will spray it but not to where it runs off the car.
Ok, thanks. We will just mix some up and practice till we get it right. Thanks to everyone for all the help!
