The 3rd Annual South Florida Shootout is scheduled for this Saturday, January 29, at the Martin County Kartway in Hobe Sound, Florida.

The format for this show is similar to the one used in sprint car shows. It is a one-day show, for one class (Senior Champ division), paying $500 to win, with a $1000 purse. Drivers draw a pill for their starting positions, in one of the 3 qualifying heats. The top finishers in each of the 3 heats earn a transfer spot to the A-Main, while the non-qualifiers run a “Last Chance” race, with the top 2 finishers from that race advancing to the feature.

The first heat race will roll off at 1pm!

In addition, after the heat races are done, the 3 heat winners will each be offered a chance to forfeit their starting spots, and instead start at the tail, for a $100 cash bonus if they can win. This will raise their total to $600 cash for the victory, if they can pull it off! Pro Truck Driver Ricky Moxley is sponsoring the Hard Charger Challenge, on behalf of his business, Finish Line Site Development!

2008 Desoto Super Speedway late model champion Dustin Chisholm, and Legend Car racers Chase Fitzgerald and Darin Coker are three of the anticipated entries!

There will also be a pre-race introduction of all the drivers on the front stretch, followed by a paper airplane toss, where all of the Shootout drivers will throw their signed plane into the group of kids, with the child who catches the winners plane winning $20. This is sponsored by Terror Grafix, and owner Tara Henderson.

The South Florida Shootout is a 50-lap race, with a mandatory 10-minute pit stop on the front stretch, at the halfway point. Lapped karts in the feature are black-flagged, and removed from the track! This always creates excitement for the spectators when the leaders close in on the backmarkers, as they often make it difficult to pass! :aktion033:

Lapped karts in the feature are black-flagged, and removed from the track!
Hmmm…so if the leader laps the entire field, he’s the only kart left on the track? I’m just curious, why are they black-flagged just because they’re being lapped?

when the leaders close in on the backmarkers, as they often make it difficult to pass!

Hmmm… Encouraging the lapped cars to fight the leaders is an unusual approach to adding excitement. I understand the concept, but I just hope the leader doesn’t get passed or wrecked in the process. Oh well, at least someone is trying something different. Good luck!

The lapped karts are removed because it puts the focus on the leaders, and makes it much easier for the spectators to follow the race.

How many times have you watched a feature event at a stock car track where the leaders get strung out in lapped traffic, and you look away for just a moment… and then it takes you a few seconds to figure out who is leading when you look back.

Now… imagine the same scenario, and this time you are instead a casual race fan (instead of a hardcore race fan), who isn’t familiar with any of the drivers they are watching… If they are lucky, they might be at a track with an operating scoring tower, or a PA System that is clear enough to hear about the noise. If not, then they are just watching cars go around in a circle.

The other reason for removing the lapped vehicles is that it’s only a 50-lap race, and on a 1/6 mile oval, with 18 starters, with lap times in the 11-second range, leaving the lapped karts out there is pointless.

Congratulations to Legends Car driver Chase Fitzgerald of Lutz, FL, for winning the 3rd Annual S. FL Shootout, and collecting the $500 cash winners prize yesterday!

Congratulations also to Pure Stock driver (Hendry County Motorsports Park) Willie Wallace of Okeechobee, for finishing 5th. Willie now stands as the ONLY driver to complete every lap, in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd South Florida Shootouts.

Three drivers made the trip down from Noblesville, Indiana to race in the Shootout. Included were Todd and Robb Pickett, owners of Speed Creek Raceway, in Lapel, IN.

What a nice little track!

Sure Is–

A nice little Track.
If only some Modified Mini-Stocks took to the raceway, the stands would be packed, I’m sure. No really, they would…it’s not all that unreasonable.

That is a very nice track. But it is not the track in Stewart where this shootout was held. I think it might be track in lapel, In. that they mentioned in an earlier post. Not really sure.

Congratulation Chase.

it is not the track in Stuart

Oki, I can believe that! I’ve been to the Stuart track many years ago, and although it has a nice surface, it didn’t look anything like this.

Yes, sorry for the confusion. The track pictured above is in Lapel, IN. It is Speed Creek Raceway, and the owners attended the race at Martin County Kartway yesterday, in Stuart.
