Powells Mem. Race

How was the Powells Mem. Strange after all the years and good reports from the pass runnings, nothing this year. Or maybe I missed it.

It was awesome. I’m surprised there weren’t comments either.

Here it is…

I seriously doubt anyone moderating this board would stop anyone from posting the GREAT write up by Jason of the Powell race that I copied and pasted for your reading!. There isnt a person in all of racing who would do that! The Powell Memorial is far too sacred to all of us who love and know James and his family. There is no more war! and I remind everyone that it is Craig who made sure Jack Smith got a REAL nice wheelchair. Because of that kindness Jack will be at PGS enjoying racing and friends!

Post 2011 Powell Memorial " A Look Back"
The 2011 edition of the Powell memorial is in the record books, and with the 16th running of the race the critics were beginning to wonder if there was ever going to be a repeat winner. The question was answered Saturday night as Ocala, Fl driver Ivedent Lloyd jr. took the checkered flag for the second time in Florida’s most prestigous race for the late model division. This race took on a more important meaning for Bubba Raceway Park owner Bubba Clem as he reset the number of laps to 67 in honor of the date of the tragic event that took the lives of Buddy and Elizabeth Powell, who is survived by their son James Powell the third, James’ twin daughters Ashley and Nicole, and James’ aunt Loveda McNair and uncle CJ Powell.

Former winners from the race were on hand in a ceremony to commemorate the Powell family by speaking about what it meant to win the race and what it meant for them to hand that trophy over to James Powell afterwards. The drivers that attended were from both dirt and the asphalt era of the race which included Patrick Williams, Mike Frankland, Ivedent Lloyd, Johnny Collins and 2010 champ Phillip Cobb. Other past winners that were not in attendance include Jeff Purvis, current Sprint Cup star David Ruetimann, Freddie Query, and 3 time winner Wayne Anderson.

The weekend’s events began friday night as 42 cars took qualification laps around Florida’s oldest race facility. The man who took the top honors for the race was Middleburg, Fl wheelman " The Magicman" Mark Whitener driving the black and blue #58 Big Frog motorsports, Dave’s Towing late model. Mark circled the track at a time of 16.468 seconds with an average speed of 81.243 mph. For setting the fastest lap Mark earned the Byron Koury $500.00 pole award and a driver website from CS advertising. The second fastest time went to Ivedent Lloyd, 3rd to Dillon Wood 4th Shan Smith, and rounding out the top five was Austin Kirkpartrick.

As Friday nights heat races came to an end there were a few top late model drivers on the outside looking in. One was defending 2010 Powell Memorial champ Phillip Cobb who has been struggling for most of the 2011 season as was Tyler Ivey who has already collected a $5,000.00 check this year in the late model division at BRP. Those two drivers were relegated to B-mains that would take place Saturday night.

The track conditions for fridays racing were tacky and exhibited 2 and 3 wide racing in some parts of the track. The track prep crew had been working feverishly at bringing a surface to the table that was competitive and would provide multiple grooves for the drivers and great racing for the fans to see. After the nights events had concluded, Bubba and his staff were on the tractors and and grader trying to prep the surface for Saturdays action to hit the track.

Friday nights heat race winners in the late model division were, Christian Augspurger, Cale Simmons, Mark Whitener, Brandon Cameron, and Ivedent Lloyd.

Saturdays events started off with entrance of Wrestling Hall of Fame Star Hulk Hogan, as he was given the grand tour of the racing facility by track owner Bubba Clem. The fans were on their feet giving hogan a standing ovation as he passed by and waved at the fans. Hogan also made himself available many time throughout the night for fan autographs an photo ops with the fans, it was a great experience for me as a father to see my kids get the chance to meet a famous wrestler who took the time to talk to them and sign an autograph for them.

As pre race track prep and hot laps concluded it was time for the b- mains to run and to set the rest of the 24 car field for the 16th Powell memorial. The first b-main saw Brandon DeWitt and Kyle Vansickle transfer to the A- main. In the second B-main Kieth Nosbich and Tyler Ivey grabbed the final transfer spots. Bubba Clem saw it fit to add one more spot to the 24 car field and gave Darell Padgett a provisional starting spot because he was the highest in points not to make the race. That left 2010 race winner Phillip Cobb in the pits for the race due not transferring through the B-mains.

The top ten drew for their starting spots which put Jay Johnston on the pole and eventual race winner Ivedent Lloyd in the eighth starting position. Race grand marshall Hulk Hogan climbed up on the starters stand and gave the command to start the engines by saying " Gentlemen, start your engines brother!!". The field came to life and did the famous 3 wide salute to the fans parade lap in front of a packed house at Bubba Raceway Park. With perfect track conditions Hulk Hogan waived the green and the race was underway. Jay Johnston led the first 17 laps until Ivedent Lloyd took the top spot. The went green until lap 34 when the # 07 of David Clegg went around in turn four bringing out the first yellow of the race. The next yellow was at lap 40 when 5 cars piled up out of four which included Tyler Ivey, Jay Johnston, Chrisrian Augspurger, Roger Crouse, and Mike Nasworthy. The race had two more minor cautions but the big mover of the night was Johnny Collins who climbed twenty spots to claim second but came up short at the races end. Jeff Matthews who was flown in by helicopter after competing at another race facility in the modified division finished third. Dillon Wood despite looking like the man who could best Ivendent Lloyd finished fourth followed by Kieth Nosbisch in fifth. Fast time winner Mark Whitener claimed the sixth spot and seventh went to Brandon Cameron. Eight place went to Brandon DeWitt, Ninth place saw Shan Smith grab that spot, and rounding out the top ten was Bo Allen. Looking back on this years Powell Memorial i have to say it was a huge success. I am looking forward to what next year has to offer as I am sure it will be one hell of a good time.

Carol what war are you talking about? I am not aware of this. Did Bubba have a deal with Florida Flagstand, because there sure hasn’t been any news about Bubba’s track on this site. I figure if Bubba’s Army has people that are new to racing it would be shameful if they did not look at Karnac. Also while looking at Florida Flagstand I came across a radio clip from Bubba’s radio show about he has already banned his first person from his track. A engine builder name Delgado, who builds Jeff Matthews engines. I don’t want to quote Bubba but it was something to hear him call Delgado certain names. This was from something that Delgado said about the way tech was done after the Powell race.

not even a answer from Carol Wicks. Quess Bubba is taboo on KARNAC.

Darren

i took the time to get you the information you asked for. That should end the thread… there is no “competition” between Florida Flag Stand and Karnac… both owners have put all the negative feelings aside and Craig has been wonderful to Jack…
This ends it… you could have just said thank you! Bubba has absolutely NOTHING to do with the subject. You asked for the info on the Powell Memorial and you got it.
carol

Please Carol don’t get so high and mighty. I ask for something I got it, thank you. You are the one that mention about no more war. I asked about that. Also I mention the fact that it would be nice to build KARNAC reader count up, even from Babba’s fans. So that I beleive shows I was hopeing that more people and newer people would come on here. If your happy with the low number of people that post on here then who the heck am I to over rule you.
I guess I won’t ask about the negative feelings. Thank you.

Let me make it perfectly clear that Bubba Raceway Park is just as welcome as any other track to submit their race results to me for posting on Karnac.com’s Florida Stock Car Racing. The problem may be that Bubba Clem does not have a media person who writes up press releases from the racing action at Bubba Raceway Park. If he does that person is not submitting those press releases to me at Karnac.com. Neither Karnac.com nor myself have any malice toward Bubba Raceway Park.

The only way I have managed to come up with results from Bubba Raceway Park to post is to wait until results are put up on their website. So if it weren’t for my extended effort Karnacians would never see any BRP results here on Karnac.com. I check each day after they run a race program and generally nothing is posted on their website until Tuesday. When it is posted there is never a story just race results in agate form.

If you would like to see race reports from Bubba Raceway Park here on Karnac.com you’ll have to talk with Bubba Clem. Have him hire someone who would be willing to write up press releases. If he does indeed have someone encourage him to have that person submit press releases to me and to do so in a timely fashion.
