Big Field for V8 StockCar with CFR SCCA at Daytona Aug 6-7

We have an interesting mix of cars and drivers for next weekends CFR SCCA/V8 StockCar points race. Some fifty cars are now expected for the big bore group, with most eligible for points in one of V8 StockCar’s four classes. Already there are 15 Porterfield Enterprises V8 GT-1 eligible cars, including three that are built to Grand Am Rolex GT rules. In our V8 GT-1 category we have a former IMSA Camel GT champ (Dick Greer), SCCA Trans Am competitors, (Ken Bupp, Jordan Bupp, & Juan Vento) plus former Grand Am GT competitor Keith Goldin in the Goldin Brothers Tommy Riggins built RX8. Also, Joe & Alex Gonzalez in a Pancho Weaver Camaro, Ray Webb in a ex Ryan Newman Dodge Charger, Bob Borders in a Corvette, Tad Segars in the HyPoxy Monte Carlo, Tom Keleher in a Derhaag type Camaro, Squeak Kennedy in the Bemco Grand Am spec Corvette, son Bobby Kennedy in a 2011 Bemco Camaro and the truly unique and very quick 1963 Tommy Riggins built tube frame Ford Falcon of Bill Riddell. Riddell’s ride is state of art Trans Am type underneath, but with a very cool wide body, vintage look Falcon on top.

In our LG Motorsports V8 GT-2 category, points leader Bill McGavic in his fast tube frame RX7 will contest with Carlos Lira’s Gary Yeomans Ford 2012 Mustang Boss 302S, Chris Harris’ 1995 tube frame RX7, Mark Strong in a Panoz GTS, Gary Jensen in a 996 Porsche GT3 Cup car Terry Taylor in a Datsun 240Z and more.

In the PitBoxes.com V8 SPO class, former 3 time Nascar Goody’s Dash champ Larry Hoopaugh leads a fast field with Lee Arnold in his V8 StockCar.com Impala, Paul Breehne in his Rousch Yates Performance Parts Ford Fusion, Adam Romito in his Monte Carlo and ARCA racer Willie Mullins in a Ford.

The Howe V8 GTA class will be hotly contested with former champ Randy Walker, two time class runner up Tom Graham, Alabama fast guys Bobby and Roger Reuse, Hall Robertson, Cameron Lawrence, Jim Matheson, and John Davis on hand to do battle.

This should easily be one of the largest SCCA GT groups for the 2011 calendar year and those who haven’t raced at DIS in a while are going to love the new, ultra smooth surface on the oval. All of the V8 StockCar class track records are in danger of being obliterated next weekend.

Tommy Riggins, driving Dave Machavern’s Falcon GT-1 cut some super fast laps at DIS in practice yesterday. Tommy had a best lap of 1:46.8, which if memory serves me, is quicker than the GT-1 track record. Kenny Bupp also went sub 1:50 with a best of 1:49 and change in his Riley & Scott Camaro.

We had some issues with our Corvette, a cam sensor going south, leaving the car sounding and running like a six cylinder. LS engine guru Jordan Bupp who works for Horsepower Sales in Pompano Beach quickly diagnosed and handled the problem for us.

V8 StockCar Saturday 8/6 Daytona Report
Roush-Yates Ford Power was dominant Saturday, August 6 at Daytona International Speedway for round ten of the V8 StockCar Road Racing Series. The V8 Series was running with the Central Florida Region SCCA with two races on the weekend. Despite the 100 degree heat, during Saturday morning qualifying, former IMSA and Grand Am Champ Tommy Riggins obliterated the V8 Series GT-1 track record with a 1:47.908 blast that was more than four seconds quicker than Doug Harrington’s former standard. Riggins was driving the “new” 1963 Ford Falcon he built for Dave Machavern. All state of the art Trans Am car underneath but with a very cool downforce, wide body vintage Falcon silhouette on top. Power of course, was from Roush-Yates Engines and the combination proved deadly for the competition as the smooth driving Riggins easily drove away from the nearly fifty car field. Second overall was another Riggins built Falcon that of Amelia Island, Florida’s Bill Riddell.

In the PitBoxes.com V8 SPO class for ex Nascar Cup cars or super late model types, Paul Breehne Jr took the win in his Rainer Chassis Ford Fusion late model powered by a Roush-Yates mill. Breehne, the “slideways” driving racer from Naples, Florida eclipsed Bill Smith’s six year hold on the class track record by nearly two seconds. Breehne had his Ford really flying, clocking right at 200 mph in the tri-oval. Crew chief Mike Breault credits Roush-Yates for giving the team the edge they need to challenge former 3 time Nascar Dash Champ Larry Hoopaugh and his Monte Carlo for the 2011 class championship.

In the Howe Racing V8 GTA class, Ford got it done again, as Tommy “Hollywood” Graham took the win in his
Mike Breault prepped Ford Taurus. Graham is a two time runner up for the class championship and also an SCCA Trans Am competitor.

In the LG Motorsports V8 GT2 class, Grand Am Series racer Derek Whitis took the win in his Porsche GT3 Cup Car.

Sunday qualifying went off at 0900 and the temperature hadn’t quite hit 100 yet, but it was heading in that direction. With the Saturday race winning Falcon driven by Tommy Riggins already back in the Jacksonville shop, qualifying looked to be a shootout between Bill Riddell in the other Falcon, Alex Gonzalez in the Weaver built Camaro and Jordan Bupp in his TA Corvette. At the end of the session Gonzalez stood at the top of the heap at 1:51.749, with Bupp not far back at 1:52.293. In V8 GT2 Gary Jensen took the honors with a fast 1:58.549. Gulfport, Florida’s “Hollywood” Graham took the V8 GTA top spot with a 1:58.922, followed by Bobby and Roger Reuse in their new Camaro’s at 2:00 and change. In V8 SPO Paul Breehne blasted the V8 class record with a blistering 1:54.175 breaking his own track record set on Saturday.

Sunday’s race went off at 1:18 in the afternoon with the ambient around 100 and the track surface nearly 150 degrees. A great matchup between Gonzalez and Bupp was negated when shortly after taking the green, Bupp had an oil line fitting leaking sending him to the garage. On lap 5 a full course caution was called after Paul Breehne had a tire go down in the tri-oval hammering the outside wall with the right side of his racer. Breehne was OK and the car badly damaged but repairable. At the restart, Gonzalez checked out and then put her on cruise control to the finish with a 9 second margin over the A Sports Racer of Jacek Mucha, with Hollywood coming home third overall and first in V8 GTA. Gary Jensen had a great run in his Porsche 996 Cup car taking the LG Motorsports V8 GT-2 honors, followed in class by Derek Whitis and James Scheffer. Roger Reuse and Randy Walker had fun racing eath other and came home second and third in V8 GTA, with Willie Mullins taking the top honors in V8 SPO in his beautiful 1955 bodied Ford Fairlane. As noted, the car is really a 90’s Nascar Cup chassis with a restoration quality vintage body and 700 plus HP Nascar motor under the hood.

The V8 Series thanks the Central Florida Region SCCA for the fine job orchestrating the show and a special thanks to their workers for braving the oppressive heat.

Next up for the V8 Racer’s is Charlotte Motor Speedway on August 20 & 21. This is the first SCCA sanctioned race at CMS in quite a few years and the group is excited to get a crack at the famous circuit.

Man that Fairlane looks too good to race! Wasnt all that in the turns but some good hp on the big track!

The Fairlane has a 730 HP Roush motor, the chassis is a 90’s Hopkins Cup chassis. Bugsy’s did a beautiful job with the body.

Tony’s ex ASA type V8 GTA has about 520 HP at about 2800# w/driver

Camera car: Jim Jonsin’s Porsche is about 400 HP to the wheels, the great brakes and sequential gear box helps it keep up.
