Has Winning become TOO important?

HOLY COW BATMAN :huepfen024:

  • Tom Jarrett now that’s some fun there I will have to say he was fast & won very often. I did not think anyone here would know him.

GREW UP WATCHING HIM SLIDE AROUND OHIO’S SHORT TRACKS!!!

oh man, now we are talking racing. Tom Jarrett from Austintown, Ohio. He raced at Canfield, Sharon, Butler, Expo, Lernerville, Raceway 7, Wayne County and North Hills. He started in 1962 and quit in 1986. Watched him every Sat. nite at Canfield, Sun. afternoon at Sharon. In 1969 he drove a Fairlane that when it came out of turn 4 and on the front straightaway screamed like a cat. What is so amazing is he never won a championship at Canfield. He was great. This is when racers race 2, 3 maybe 4 nights a week. Last I know, he had a used car lot in the Youngstown area. This is why racing was so great to watch or be a part of back then, drivers like him.

I spent three years working on TJ’s car in the pits and at Marvin Friends gas station in Girard. We would travel Friday, Saturday and Sunday just to race at Lernerville, Wayne County, Canfield, Expo, Raceway 7, Eriez, Stateline and anywhere else we could race. Even raced in the Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway in 1974. Last time I was back in Youngstown visiting family, I think he still had his car lot.

I only made it to Eriez one time… I’m thinking 1973. Do either of your know the names Jay Plyler, Bobby Schnars, Ron Blackmer, or Emory Mahan?

I can think of more, but let’s start here.

I lived about 15 minutes from the Mahoning County fairgrounds were the Canfield Speedway was and Sharon Speedway was about 45 minutes away. Spent my time there, never made it to Erie.
O. camper, do you have the Ron Pollock book that he put together called “Canfield Speedway” a photo journey 1946-1973. Some good picture of Tom Jarrett, and alot of other racers that race there and Sharon Speedway.

Here are some shots of Tom Jarrett out of the 1974 Eriez Speedway year book. Racing Lyle Brown #2 and Jay Plyler #79

Great Pictures from way back when. How about the names of
Jimmy Bickerstaff
Junior Hanley
Glenn Gault
Tom Wiemer

Could name a lot of them

Jim Bickerstaff from Mineral Ridge
Tom Wimer of Girard, he and my dad worked on some job sites together.
Glenn Gault, the Orange Blossom Special. He ran a few Hooter races.
Bill Forney #199 a legend
Dave Benner
Mason Hiester #71
Jim Becker #3 stocks and lates
Bill Larson #88 stocks and lates
Bob Krauss
Tom Lanterman
these tracks ran only 2 classes back in the day and they had more cars then tracks today that have six classes. With 2 classes they had more races per night also. You went home after the races already thinking about next week.

Grew up halfway between Eriez and Stateline…Remember all these names.

Sharon Speedway and ARCA driver

Pulled these pictures up of an old Ohio racer. Jim ran at every track that he could pull his car to. Can remember driving up Rt. 46 in Mineral Ridge and seeing Bickerstaff Tire.

I never saw Bickerstaff race in person, but his name turned up in all kinds of results from places I wouldn’t have expected. Anywhere from Trenton, to Daytona Memorial Stadium. As time goes on, I’ve seen him mentioned in dozens of different places… like you say, he towed anywhere there was a race.

As for Eriez, how about Jim Pollaro, Rod Barton, and Ron Stanko…?

Eriez

I seem to remember Pollaro and Stanko.
