4 Florida drivers!

Bone—why aren’t you the 5th. You could be a non-winger, 1/4 high-banked, fastest on the earth racer, right there in the thick of it? I think you could!r.

A couple of tidbits about some of these other racers, and in many cases, their ties to Florida:

Polesitter Tony Hunt was once an instructor at the Richard Petty Driving Experience at Disney World Speedway.

Aaron Pierce also runs SLM’s, and was here for a Governors Cup race, and returned for Speedweeks at NSS.

Russ Gamester ran the ASA Series for awhile, and ran at Lakeland I believe.

Eric Gordon has raced Silver Crown cars at both Disney & Lakeland. He is also a multi-time winner of the 500… always a threat to win this race.

Jeff Bloom… don’t know the exact stats, but I’d bet money he’s been in over 30 Little 500’s by now.

Jimmy McCune has run at Volusia in the Midget class, and also in the Silver Crown cars at Disney. His sister, Sarah McCune might even be a better racer than Jimmy. Their father Jim McCune was a long-time USAC racer himself.

Chet Fillip is one of only a handful of racers that can claim to have raced in both a Daytona 500, and an Indy 500. Very good racer than always seems under the radar.

Shane Cottle, just a few years ago, was wheeling a UMP Modified through Florida Speedweeks. Did real well at East Bay.

Donnie Adams also ran Speedweeks at Volusia years ago, during the Asphalt era.

Brian Tyler had a dream week in Florida… he won a Silver Crown race at Disney one Sunday. On his way home, he received a call from IRL team owner, Tim Chitwood, who told him to turn around and get back to Disney… you’re driving our car next week…!!!

I last saw Tony Elliot racing in the Florid 400, at Desoto, driving for long-time area Sprint car owner Jack Nowling of Quickload Trailers. I believe he ran either 2nd or 3rd behind winner David Steele.

Jason Cox was part of this years TBARA events at NSS during Speedweeks.

Brian Gerster has also run Silver Crown cars at Disney… possibly USA also, but can’t recall for sure.

I attended this race a few years ago and just loved it. What was amazing was how close the top cars were! There were several that went at it for hundreds of laps, and ended up close together and on the same lap. Amazing and so much more interesting than a 500 lap stock car snoozer.

Does anyone know if there is a broadcast of the race tonight? I looked around for possibly a radio station or Internet Broadcast, but couldn’t find any mention.

Must See Racing has Twitter updates.
They should have this race live on TV.

I agree. I’ve paid for a few online internet broadcast Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model Shows, and some World of Outlaws late model races, and I would definitely pay to watch a Little 500 live. There are Sprint Car fans around the country who follow the tradition of this race each year. Seems like they would have enough interest, even if they blacked out the Indiana area.

On another note, I wish Florida could develop one “big” traditional pavement Sprint Car race into our own tradition. I know the attempt several years back at Desoto didn’t turn a profit, but I was thinking… Now that the Sunshine/Showtime Speedway is getting ready to reopen, I think a Saturday night sprint car race there, the night before the annual St. Petersburg Gran Prix Indy Car race, would pretty much guarantee a huge turnout of fans. Would love to see the TBARA on that night every year, at the Showtime Speedway, maybe with a pumped up purse large enough to attract a few of the northern USAC/Must See teams down. With the thousands of Indy Car fans in the area that weekend, and the strong support of the TBARA in that area already, they might even have to turn away fans.
