Need Some Help Here...

Trying to ID this driver… The helmet says 1983 NASCAR Winston Racing Series Champion… That was Mike Alexander, and this guy is not Mike Alexander… Anybody recognize him?

Looking at the style of number of the side of the car, it almost looks like Tommy Reffner out of Wisconsin. The helmet may be a track champion helmet, not the national series helmet.

Looks like Ricky Bobby… lol

His name is Roy, says it right on the front of his drivers suit.

On a hunch, I tried Roy Smith, a multi-time champ on the Winston West circuit. Thought I had it nailed until reading his career highlights, which include championships in 1980, 81, and 82… but NOT in 83. The picture I saw looks very close to this one, but not identical enough to be sure it’s him.

PS - the “Roy”'on the uniform actually looks like it may really say “Royal”.

My guess would be…Roger Dolan, 1983 Winston Weekly Racing Series Champion, Central Region.

Well, some of my Midwest buddies say it’s NOT Tommy Reffner.

If it helps any, the trophy has an “84” on it.

Looks like the right rear tire is an asphalt shoe… Roger Dolan was a dirt guy, and I thought he wore glasses.

I thought about that, Royal Oaks or Royal Crown Cola but the names are too long.

Has been ID’ed as Roy Hendrick (Ray’s son) in the Mid-Atlantic region. Been told that those helmets were also given to track and regional champs, not just the national champ.

Southside Speedway, Richmond, VA (where Denny Hamlin cut his teeth).

Photo ID

Roy Hendrick is correct. Ray Hendrick’s SON not brother. Ran mostly in the mid Atlantic area - Langley, Southside, Richmond Fairgounds etc.

Let me here it Jerry !

“You were right EZ, I was wrong.”

:ernaehrung004:

EZ was right, and I was…

Mistaken…!

OK, I’ll accept that with a big smile !

Thanks guys… that’s what this board is really good for… After looking through the Official NASCAR Winston Racing Series Record Book and Press Guide, found that Roy Hendrick was Late Model Stock champion at both Orange Speedway in Rougemont, NC and at his home track Southside Speedway in Richmond, VA…
