n the past 5 years the National Guard has given Hendrix over 130 Million in sponser money. time to stop the waste.
will just waste it on something else
As much as I love racing, I’ve always seen these military sponsorships a huge waste of taxpayer dollars.
The only exception being the Daytona 500 in I think 1991. The 5 branches had 1-race sponsorships for unsponsored teams at the hight of the Desert Storm War. Kulwicki was in an Army car, Greg Sacks was Air Force, Dave Marcis had the Coast Guard… can’t recall the Marines or Navy cars. But I did think it was cool that Bush himself made an appearance, and Air Force One did a couple of fly-by’s across the track during the race.
Greg Sacks was in the 18 Navy car, Mickey Gibbs was in the 24 Air Force car and Buddy Baker was in the 88 Marines car. You other 2 are correct. I have the race on tape and still watch it from time to time!
Since its sounds like it comes out of the NG budget which comes from the defense budget which comes from you and me, we, the taxpayer maybe we sure put it in the VA hosp. budget. The NG is and have been called up more then ever since 2001. Put it were it belongs.
Good call there Big Block. Thanks for filling in my fading memory. Did I get the year right? I know I’m close, but not sure I’m right.
Yes! The year is correct!!

Starting lineup for the race. I used to LOVE the old CBS broadcasts with Ken Squire, Ned Jarret, David Hobbs and Chris Economaki. The new stuff just isn’t the same.
Thanks for the clip. Cool to see some names that haven’t been heard in years.
Hut Stricklin, Eddie Bierschwale, Phil Barkdoll, Jimmy Means, Mickey Gibbs…

Cool clip. I remember when I used to get excited about the Cup races coming on television. I don’t have that feeling any more but when I saw this clip, I still felt that excitement. You’re correct, the new stuff just isn’t the same.
When I was a little kid (I’m 39 now), I remember only getting 4 races per year, live, flag to flag: The Daytona 500, both Michigan races and the fall Talladega race. It was an event at our house. Mom cooked lots of food and we had several friends over for the afternoon. Now, if there are cars on the speedway, it’s on live TV. I am not saying that it’s a bad thing, but it waters down the product just a bit. I realize that part of the reason the sponsors spend so much money is because they are guaranteed a certain amount of air time from week to week, but I can’t honestly say, with the exception of the Daytona 500 every year, that I have been excited to see a race. Anymore I just tivo them and watch a 4 hour snooze fest in less than an hour.
I think they should have some of the speed weeks racing from NNS on and stuff like that it is more fun to watch the short track racing
I loved the way ESPN covered the races back in the '80s… No hour-long boring pre-race show… Many times the cars would be on the pace lap when the race came on the air… No having to wait…
