Its great to see that New Smyrna can still put on the big event! This is Governor’s Cup weekend, and if last night’s kick off was any indication about what is to come, we are headed for some excellent races tonight.
If you missed the 100 lap Pro LM feature, then you missed the most enjoyable dual for the lead that I’ve seen for a long, long time. Rich Clauser and Brandon Johnson went at it for the last 30+ laps. Passing, repassing, inches apart, and with no visible contact. It was pretty amazing! These guys are both very skilled: Rich runs NSS often and is always in top form, but Brandon races much less frequently, yet is clearly one of the top 1% of drivers. Not just a wheel holder, but someone with excellent car control who can also get the most out of his ride. There was plenty of other traffic, but I really got a kick out of the leaders.
Brandon Johnson ended up winning, but Rich has two more chances this weekend. He is running the 200 and the modified 100 tonight.
It felt like the old days at the World Series: I wandered through the pits and found it stuffed with haulers from all over creation. There were so many cars I didn’t recognize too, its gonna be a good night!
