Fireball Roberts drove this Pontiac wrenched by Smokey Yunick… He won his 100-mile qualifier, leading all 40 laps… He led 31 laps of the 500 until he blew up the engine…

Bobby Johns of Miami drove the 1959 Pontiac Roberts used in the '59 500 and nearly won the race. With just a few laps to go, he was lapping slower cars coming off turn two when the wind simply sucked the rear window out of the car causing Johns to lose control and spin. He recovered to finish second behind winner Junior Johnson.
