Im always trying to find new ways to help the sport of stock car racing so I thought about this…
How many of you fans or drivers would like to see a competition caution thrown at the half way point of some of our 50 and 100 lap races to bunch the field back up?
I know from a leaders stand point it doesnt seem fair but i personally think it would make for a better show over all.
I don’t like pre-planned “competition cautions”. The second half of the first segment you won’t see any racing. Nobody tries to catch the car in front of them, because the flag is gonna do it for him anyways. Conserve tires, stay out of trouble, and let the laps wind down. Meanwhile, the fan gets a 25 lap parade instead of a race…
One rule I do like, is done at the Snowball Derby… they will throw a yellow after any run of 75 caution-free laps. At the Derby, EVERYONE’S tires are shot after 75, and this allows teams to take the tires they MUST have, and keeps more racers on the lead lap.
If you have to manipulate a race, it just proves you aren’t putting on a very good show.
A competition caution isn’t fair to the leader, it’s also not fair to anyone else in the race with the exception of the last place guy.
And whatever NASCAR does, always do the opposite.
I agree 100%, Matt. Whatever NASCAR does, do the opposite. I’m for a competition yellow at the halfway point ONLY if the race has gone green up to that point. There’s nothing worse for the fans than to watch a leader running away in his own zip code for more than 20 laps. If you’re going to win the race, surviving ONE restart isn’t asking a lot.
I think that all those gimmicks are there to build action & excitment.
What I have seen more and more up this way are more shorter features races instead of one long one. Some race tracks will do 2 X 40 lappers or 3 with the Highlight division. Some have those races connected to each others with the Monza system, others just makes them independants from each others.
Either way, the rush to go up front is waaaaaaay shorter than a loooooong race that never ends, where you have 10 racing laps at the start and 15 racing laps at the end.
And that falls directly at the right time, where most of the fans have the attention span shorter and shorter.
Just look at the drift shows, 20 some cars, 4 hours+ shows, all mini races, 2 by 2, smoke, smell and sound. They pack the place. Musta be doin somethin right…Right???
If a race does not require a pit stop lets not try to create an issue that is not there. Races without stops are generally viewed as a dash and you have to earn what ever position you have. Dirt tracks don’t need it as there usually is more than one groove. Mandatory pit stops simply set the stage for a whole new level of cheating and in reality reward someone for a lesser effort. That ain’t racing.
Unless there is a damn good reason, there shouldnt be any flags thrown but green. If you have an issue with pieces of tires flying through the air after 10 or 20 laps or so thats one thing but a caution just for the sake of a caution is a bunch of b.s. I do like the idea of twin 50s instead of one 100 lapper. But at the same time make that double points.(points awarded for each race not double points on each race, unless anybody likes the idea of the second race of the two being double points as well as regular points for the first race)Also would it kill anybody down here to take the fastest 6 cars and run a 6 car 6 lap helmet dash as a preliminary event instead of just a feature? If you dont want to run heats fine, but to see the 6 fastest battle it out alone BEFORE the feature would be interesting sometimes.
