In case you missed it

big project in NY, not new, but back on track:

http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2014/08/glenn_donnelly_creating_better_dirt_racing_empire_synthetic_dirt.html

Thanks for that post, i hadn’t heard about it. It sounds like a solution without a problem. I don’t think dust is a major problem for dirt track fans, though the casual fan he mentions might not like it. But i don’t see too many tracks spending the money to switch over.

Dust is a problem at Hendry county Speedway. The track gets dry and you do good to see the cars racing!

Its great to see someone thinking ahead and planning big for the future.

You sure that isn’t the cloud of mosquitoes?

HA! Don’t get too excited here. The article failed to mention that the experiment at Brewerton (way back in 2011) was far worse than properly groomed regular dirt. It wasn’t a small failure, it was a complete disaster. Instead of a minor dusting it hailed black grains and you couldn’t see one end of the track from the other. It produced boring train racing because the stuff is slick as can be. Some people compared it to grains of sugar. Each car that went over it peeled off a tiny layer and launched it into the sky. They tried it for 2 weeks then scraped it all back off and hopefully dumped all of that SYNDI crap into a lake somewhere.

2.75M kicked in by NY tax payers and they have not broken ground yet?
Love those “shovel ready” jobs

Luke, everyone knows that if something didn’t work the first time, then there is no way it will ever work in the future. After all, I am sure they have not tried to improve it in the last 3 years.

Kendo, why worry about money at the start of a project? Its better to break ground and then go bankrupt.

Pardon the above sarcasm, but I’m glad you guys are not in charge of things. I like progress for the sake of better racing.

Yeah, maybe you are right, maybe we can get the state of FL to throw 2.75m to OSW to fix the weeping problem

Great idea? Can you take care of that for us?

Just ask Rick Scott I am sure he has more than that squirreled
away that has never seen the light of day or an auditors review.

OK,here is a current pic of the land clearing. It will be interesting to watch this project unfold. One thing is for sure, upstate New Yorkers are passionate about their dirt track racing.

I wish I could share your optimism on this one! The failure in 2011 was the last time anyone has seen a grain of this magic surface anywhere. There has been zero indication that any further development has been done at all since they tore it off of Brewerton. I’d think if anything were still being improved upon they might have tried it test it since, no? Clearly just doing math in the lab isn’t an accurate test since they thought it was going to work in 2011. It had other issues as well. It created a ton of heat and fast wear in tires. There was concern that the wax component may melt onto hot surfaces and into radiators. The long term effects of breathing and ingesting this magic mix was unknown, at least that they ever told anyone. He claims in the article that the surface was tacky. Nope, the surface was ultra slick.
I like progress too, but SYNDI was not progress. It was a neat experiment but it was a 100% failure. I don’t fault them for trying though.
Donnelly is just sitting back taking in his grant money for a track complex that isn’t likely to ever be built now. The article says October, HAHAHA really? That article was written in August and they haven’t even moved a shovel of dirt yet!

When this story first came out, I was hoping it would be a great success. But I’m with Luke on this now. I followed the story, the trial, and the failure of the synthetic material. Although that was only a small scale test, it didn’t work well at all. It really hurt Brewerton in the short term. The track was known for having a really great surface and that test ruined the surface, cost it some cars and spectators. I believe they’re back on firm ground again now though. As for the track he’s building, he had some big name backers behind it, but it hasn’t seemed to go anywhere. I recently asked some people in the business up there, how it was going and if it would ever be built. They responded with an resounding “NO”. Too bad. Glen does have a reputation for making things work. Maybe he’ll do it yet, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

But on the flip side and just as deep.

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry right now.

Shovel ready jobs not so shovel ready…So what happened to the 2.75 million in tax payer dollars?

Never mind,found it.
Introducing the NY state grant issued $2.75 million dollar dirt muffins.
