Hard to believe the remains of this car still exist today… This was the #92 !957 Chevy that Herb Thomas entered in the '57 Southern 500 at Darlington for Fonty Flock to drive. Flock spun out early in the race and was a sitting duck in the middle of the track as he was hit at full-speed by both Bobby Myers and Paul Goldsmith. Flock was seriously injured and the wreck pretty much ended his career behind the wheel… Myers, who was driving a car for Petty Enterprises, was killed in the crash (remains of that car after the crash pictured here too) while Goldsmith was also banged up pretty bad but came back to have a stellar career…
It looks to me like the #92 car is a 1957 Pontiac rather than a 1957 Chevrolet.
You can see the remnants of the Pontiac arrow trim on the sides of the car.
Ya beat me to it.
My dad had a '57 and later so did I.
But, the story appears to be correct excepting the Chevy typo.

Hmmm… Not a very happy relic. I would not have that one around.
Different strokes, I guess.
