Not sure what track but this photo is from 1950… During his heat race, the carburetor linkage fell off the car Vittie Cothron was driving… Cothron simply climbed through the windshield and held the carburetor open while steering with his other arm… He finished third in the race! Don’t think you could do this today!
A reader of this board came pretty close. He was leading a race at Hialeah, but was involved in a crash. It was a big one and the red flag was out, so he had the chance to fix his stuff. One of the problems was that the throttle linkage came apart, so he scrounged around the junk in the infield grass and found some wire. After tying it to the carb, he could pull the throttle with one hand and steer with the other. AND I believe he won the race.
Do I have the story right…Dana Barlow?
I believe I saw Rosebud Flowers @ Orlando reach through the windshield and adjust the distributor (with a twist or two of his hand) and then continue–in the demo derby.
'49 Olds I think…
