Southern All Stars 2017 Recap

FAYETTEVILLE, TN- The Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series will kick off its 35th consecutive year of dirt late model racing in the southeast and the series had a few first time accomplishments happen in 2017.

First Austin Horton of Newnan, GA., ran his first full year with the series and became the first driver to win the series title as well as the Cruise with the Champions/Dirtondirt.com Rookie of the Year. Horton did not have a win in 2017 but in the 15 races race Austin had 7 top five finishes and 10 top ten finishes, with his best finish a second place at his home track Senoia Raceway. Look for Austin to be back in 2018 to compete for the title again.

Tristan Sealy of Moultrie, GA., was also in his first full year with the series and went to tracks that he had never seen but kept improving and finished second in the series points with one top five finish and that occurred at Senoia. Tristan also had 5 top finishes during the 2017 season. Tristan plans on return to the series in 2017 and making a run for the title.
Eric Hickerson of Linden, TN., was another rookie contender in 2017. Eric was also in his first full year of tour racing and captured the AR Bodies Challenge with the series in 2017, finished third in series points, his best finish was third at his home track Thunderhill Raceway, and Eric also had 9 top ten finishes during the year. Eric plans on competing with the series in 2018.

T J Reaid of Acworth, GA., finished fourth in also his first full year with the series as he got his first series win at the Talladega Short Track in the season finale. T J also had two top 5 finishes and six top10 finishes. Also T J joins his dad Tony on the all-time winners list for Southern All Stars as they are the first father son duo to win Southern All Stars races. His father Tony won two Southern All Star events at Dixie Speedway during the 1991 season.

Brad Skinner of Spring Hill, TN., came in the first spot in his second ear of tour racing. Brad had to miss a few races early in the season as he flipped his car and had to wait on a new one and missed a few races. Brad had one win in 2017 and that was at his home track Thunderhill. Brad also had two top 5?s and four top 10?s Brad also finished second in the AR Bodies Challenge. Brad also plans on competing for the series title in 2018.

In 2017 the Southern All Stars ran 15 events at 8 different tracks and 200 different drivers competing with the series. Drivers that scored wins also on the series were Casey Roberts of Toccoa, GA., with three wins Southern Raceway & Cochran Motor Speedway, four time Southern All Stars Champion Clint Smith back in victory lane for first time since 2009 at Senoia, Dane Dacus of Lakeland, TN., Thunderhill, Jason Hiett of Oxford, AL., Talladega Short Track, Brandon Overton of Evans, GA., Talladega Short Track, David Breazeale of Four Corners, MS., Thunderhill, Donald McIntosh of Blairsville, GA., Smoky Mt, Ross Bailes of Clover, SC., Cherokee and Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, IL., Smoky Mt.

The 2018 schedule should be ready for release next week with the season opener right now set for Sunday March 4th March Madness at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, SC., and will pay $12,000 to win.
