Mart Nesbitt is a banker during the day and a Procup racer at night. And so what do you do on an off weekend before the season finale at Lakeland next week? Go to the beach? No been there done that. Go to the mountains? No he lives there. Now we know, he takes the WHOLE:huepfen024: family to a race. His wife takes a sigh.
His dad loves it because he is the owner/crew chief for young development driver Megan Reitenhour who is driving in the 50 lap Old School procup race. Mart himself is asked to be the track announcer. He puts his own mom as a scorer. His daughter is his assistant in the tower and in victory lane ceremonies when not on the phone talking to all her friends. Typical for a 8 year old.
Now did we say announcer? Some NEXTEL drivers retire from racing and go into the announcing booth. So does Nesbitt plan to follow pursuit? He just grins.
Nesbitt did a good job in his announcing duties because he knows all the aspects of how race cars handle on the track or what drivers are thinking. All of this coming from driving in Procup and racing at the old Asheville Speedway. The only mishap of the day came when it was time to play the National anthym which wouldnt come up on the PA system. When told that the PA announcer is supposed to sing the anthym when all else fails,
we got a long glare and a laugh from the family.
He did talk on the radio but we assure you he was no Jimmy Wilson and didnt see it another way.Nor did he send nobody to the back of the longest line. He was also open to a driver protest after the enduro race. He made himself available to talk. Nor did he need a soap box to stand up on at the drivers meeting.
All in all it was a good night of fun and family fellowship at Tri County Speedway and cost nothing because Mart put them all to work. He must have watched the movie National Lampoon in the past.
Now is Nesbitt a threat to current Hooters chief announcer Gene Crane? No way.
But for now he is keeping his daytime job, it pays the bills. But in hindsight you could tell he was having a lot of fun in which is what the Old School procup guys are all about.
