Haven’t seen this guy for quite some time! Well Steve came back to race in the 50 lap Sportsman race at CCMP and he walked away with a very happy win! WTG Steve!

Did that car start out that way?
Look’s dinged-up somewhat.
Is racing that rough down there?
Take off 2 fenders and you’re looking at a Modified.
What happened to the “Sportsman” part of that class? Derrick Heath, Rick McMehan, Steve O’Lone, Mark Peterson. Al Bouchard, Matt Scheffler, Mike Soukup… those guys had “Sportsman” cars. All except Mike are GONE. What a shame that a few cars like this one, ran off 25 others. Don Nerone… FIX this problem!
You’re looking at a perfect example of why that class is almost extinct. Sorry Rick, but Aaron’s ABC bodied car didn’t help things a bit either! His earlier car, and David’s also were perfect examples of how it was suposed to be… good looking “Sportsman” cars.

lol yep that’s the way i saw it in warm ups it looked just like that
i dont think anyone even touched him in the feature once
the back and middle was were the action was so i watch there most of the race they put on the show /91/86/19/22/3/13 that’s about all i can think of right now there was more
the only thing i cant figure out is why the 13 keep his spot after the turn 2 thing
if you spin a guy out you go to the back right
there was a lot of confusing moments to say the least
but it was cool i had fun got a little cold about 10:30 or so

Jerry I could say some things about your statement and Steve but I will not.
i didn’t look the car over
but noway can it have the motor placement of a modern modified it he is referring to an open wheel mod
look at the 86 i think it was a rocket chassis it said rocket on the nose

It wasn’t a Southern Sportsman Series Race to begin with, and the motor has been teched by sss just as much as everyone elses, we played by their rules. The car was just hooked up last night and it surprised us. All the local cars were faster in practice and qualifing, we adjusted on the car after qualifing and it took off.
They teched motors in the SSS. Now thats too funny, what have you been watching? The 79x has had a big motor for the past 3 years and a bad attitude to go with it. Only problem is the SSS officials were too scared to do anything.
Now thats funny, He hasnt been in the sss for 3 yrs.
Congrats go out to Steve!!! And his crew!!!
The Fans loved having is this style of racing (50 laps):huepfen024:. We have other one in to weeks. Check the CCMP site of times. GREAT SHOW to all the Sportsman. $750.00 for the WIN. If 20 or more come we will pay a $1000.00 for the Win!!!:ernaehrung004:

Yes this year we finished third, 2006 we finished first and thats it high speed, nothing before that. Not to sure about you but hooked on phonics worked for me, want the number??
Yes, we ran this year and last year and that is it.
Steve was on a rail and he went thru tech. I didn’t hear the guys he raced with complaining, in fact the 2nd and third came up and congradulated him.
Who ever said it it wasn’t a Southern Sportsman race was right. There was some good racing all thru the field. Rick do you reconize this young fellow? Bob…
Yea. Seems like I have seen him hold a checkered flag up a time or two.

Not really a modified, Wheelbase is wrong, Engine to far forward, Wrong rear suspension, driver to far forward, main cage to wide, etc…
I guess what I really was trying to convey, is that it is not what the “Sportsman” concept was supposed to be. Tht class should be about tuning UP a Monte Carlo or Camaro… not scaling back from a Modified or a Late Model.
Steve Gainey is not the only one either. The whole concept has run away, and hasn’t been brought under control yet. If it doesn’t (and soon), there will be no more Southern Sportsman Series.
Have you looked at a FASCAR sportsman lately? Just add wide 5’s and you got a stock clip LM.

It goes back to the officials letting the rules be relaxed the first year. And each year after that allowing more. All in the name of getting bigger car counts. So don’t point fingers at drivers. Drivers in Nascar on down to the local 4 cyl bomber class will push the envelope. In the end the buck stops with the owner and the tech people. Oh and if someone is going to play tech. Then they need to bring the tools they need to the race. Not go by the old eye ball to dq cars. Prove it’s wrong or right. So that all the drivers know they are getting a fair shake.
