PA’s Dave Hess, whose son Dave Jr. is now one of the best IMCA Mod racers in the country.
The credits show this as a pic from Volusia Cty. Speedway in 1980. One thing that caught my eye, was the Hutter Racing Engines logo on the quarter panel. Hutter was known for making HUGE horsepower in the late 70’s - early 80’s.
The “Exxon Superflo” car driven by Greg Sacks. Although you may have seen this car on the track, you won’t find it listed in any finishing order. It was only used to get footage for “Days of Thunder” and was only out there for appearances, not points or prize money. There were at least 2 others… Tommy Ellis in the Hardees #18, and Bobby Hamilton in the Exxon #51.
The least known of the Treichler Brothers, was Gordie driving the #47 which was identical to brother Rogers #74. Cousin Merv Treichler may have been the best of all 3, with wins at Syracuse, Langhorne, Daytona, New Smyrna, Watkins Glen and dozens of local tracks, on both Dirt & Asphalt.
Gordie got out of racing after only a few years.
Roger was feared wherever he went, and won probably over 100 features himself. After surviving about 25years behind the wheel, he tragically wound up a para-plegic from a fall off a ladder while working on his house.
Merv just about did it all in short-track racing. He eventually got a ride in the Busch series, but money ran out quickly and he was out of the ride. That’s about the last I’ve heard of Merv.
Here is something a little different. Florida City mini stock driver Ed Bowling has the finishing touches put on his English Ford. Note the fancy shop and stacker trailer.
This happened under a yellow flag, believe it or not. George Powell spun his #52 in turn 1, but before the field slowed down, he took off down the front straight at full speed in the wrong direction. Naturally, he was headed right at someone, so they both turned toward the infield at the same time and WHAMO.
This was in Hialeah’s Cyclone class in the early '70’s. It was the roughest racing that I remember.
Ronnie Burkhart in the 54 stands on it during an early 1970’s figure 8 race. Ronnie went on to race LMs at Hialeah with the same yellow and black paint scheme.
Your’s truly in Guy Ratcliff’s LM #59 after a Feature win @ SS in the mid-70’s.
The 59 was out of Plant City and was normally driven by Frank Johnson however, Guy recruited my services for a shake-down race from time-to-time when the FOUR was out of commision.
Assistant Starter Bob Phillips in the foreground with the flag.
Have you seen that Suzuki Samurai push truck at the open wheel races lately? That is driven by “Sammy”, who recently returned to Florida. Long before his push truck days, he built and raced lots of cars including this Morris Minor mini stock.
