I was there last night, and between the crates, supers, and limited, 50 cars started the races. When I raced in the World Series in '98 and '99, we had around 30 or so cars each in limited and super late. Not that much different.

There were 88 cars in action last night, and of course that excludes the 28 ACT cars that just finished, and the trucks that haven’t arrived yet.
I don’t have the records in front of me, and I bet you don’t either, so we’ll have a test of memory!
There were lots of World Series when the tour mods and the SK’s ran together. That was the norm until a few years ago. They are down about 10 tour mods and about 5 SK’s from the last few years. Too bad, I love watching them, but there are more cars arriving. I believe there were 3 new ones last night and two more came in on Monday. The class started weak, like it used to be, but is building back to the more recent car counts.

It is fair to say that the caliber of the SLM teams is lower than in recent years, and is nothing like the “good old days”. Guess what? Dick Trickle has retired, Ed Howe has gone fishing and all the old stars have packed it in, so the good old days are gone. An event like the Snowball Derby still draws the best talent, while the appeal of the World Series has faded a bit. As a fan I still love it, but I guess it takes some money and/or updates to build the event into the future.

Try again. I clearly wrote that my estimate of the readership is a couple hundred. Not a great number, but they are all involved as fans, racers or officials. You can consider them as “no one”, I do not.
I’ll be leaving for NSS soon. It’ll be much warmer than recent nights…maybe it will be perfect racing weather. Things will cool down enough so a nice hot bowl of chili and a hot chocolate will feel really good. Don’t worry about me, I’ll have a blast! The complainers can stay home and type.

If I had the time, energy and interest to check your numbers, I would do it. But why bother? Even you and I can agree that the event has changed over the years, just like the entire sport has. If the cost of LM’s hadn’t risen so dramaticly, the numbers would not have fallen off. There are lots of other options to run now too.
I just refuse to stand back and throw darts at it and everyone that puts it on. I’ve been having a blast in Feb. (6 nights at the tracks so far, 4 more to go). Throw some extra hot dogs in the oven, I’m on the way!
You forgot about 1995. I know there were well over 200 cars on opening night because you had the Hooter’s Formula cup cars there. Racing started at 10pm and I left at 3am with more races to go!
