racing and Chili Cook-offs - does it work?

Here I am, 15 miles from Orlando Speedworld, and I constantly hear “really, there is a race track around here?” I don’t understand it, but the fact is many nearby people who could be turned into race fans, don’t know the track exists in their backyard.

So last Friday, I took the wife and kids to the chili cook-off here in Titusville. There were 24 local businesses and groups who set up a chili stations and were greeting the public, passing out food and enjoying the party atmosphere The night was very well attended too! I bet there were 1500 or so there; not bad for a small city like Titusville.

Events like this would be an excellent place to publicize the track. It would be cool to set up a racing chili booth and park a racecar or two in it. Although the event wasn’t overtly commercial, it was clear that businesses were presenting most of the booths, and many handed out flyers etc…

Here is the question: has this been tried and has it worked? My impression was, this was “our type of crowd”. We could draw some of them in.

Its easy to suggest, but I’ll also volunteer. Of course it takes the blessing of the track to make something like this happen.

I have also heard a promotional add on ESPN 95.9 about a new show Saturday mornings at 8:00 AM that will talk about LOCAL RACING I hope someone will take the time to contact this station about this show. This station is new used to be rock station in Melbourne, they also stream live at ESPN 95.9.com

I don’t understand it. The track has been closed for 3 months now. How many potential dollars have been lost these last 3 months? Snow birds, shuttle launches, nice cool comfortable evenings, NO RAIN and NOTHING. Snow birds starting to head north and taking their money with them w/o a single penny being spent at OSW.

I.ve said for a long time there needs to be more racing in the winter, less inthe summer. 1/ 3 times the people here in the winter
2/ Less rain so less rain outs!!
3/ And just plain cooler!!
Many snow birds love racing but there is very little when they’re here. Chili cookoffs and all that, great, but how about giving them some racing. No offense Rex but half or more of the nice people you saw at the chili cook off wont be here in a month or so. Keep it simple, race!!!

I don’t know…I’m picturing the parking lot at OSW full of chili cookers or maybe even a rib cook off…Start it on a Friday afternoon and give away $5 discount tickets to the races that evening. Sure would take ALOT of work.

this shits makin me hungry

Yeah, especially if theres no races.
