Bristol to Host "World's Fastest Half Mile Speed Trials" 3/19

Here’s a portion of the article:

As part of Bristol Motor Speedway’s 50th anniversary celebration, the Speedway extended invitations to several motorsports champions from wide-ranging motorsports disciplines to set class half-mile closed-course records, as well as break the 11-year-old track record.

Former NASCAR Cup driver Brad Noffsinger, Mike Lichty and Bryan Clauson will chase Sammy Swindell’s all-time Bristol track record of 138.442 mph (13.860 seconds), set during qualifying for a World Of Outlaws winged sprint car event at Bristol in June 2000.

Noffsinger and Lichty will be first to try out supermodifieds, the most exotic cars to hit Bristol’s high banks, while Clauson will run one of Tony Stewart’s pavement sprint cars.

Former AMA and World Superbike Champion Scott Russell will attempt to set a half-mile closed-course motorcycle speed record riding a Yamaha superbike. The five-time Daytona 200 winner brings substantial experience on high banked ovals, though never one as tight as Bristol’s half-mile.

Ford Racing enters its supercharged 2011 Mustang GT to Bristol to establish a half-mile closed course record for street legal cars. Ford NASCAR drivers David Ragan and Marcos Ambrose are expected to drive the ultimate “pony car” into the record books. The Mustang’s 5.0 liter engine is topped off by Ford Racing’s twin-screw supercharger and cranks out 624 horsepower. To balance all that power with more driver control, the factory suspension comes equipped with a FR3 handling pack and Ford Racing/Brembo big brake kit.

Competitors will have one hour, from approximately 5 until 6 p.m., to make record runs following the Scotts EZ Seed 300. The “World’s Fastest Half-Mile Speed Trials” is a bonus event for the Nationwide Series race ticketholders.

SPEED will air a 30-minute highlight show from “World’s Fastest Half-Mile Speed Trials” on April 2 at 4:30 p.m. ET, following its live broadcast of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race.
I’d love to see one of them wedge-type Outlaw Late Model cars from up north take this on; you know, the ones that got around Kalamazoo in like 9.92 seconds?

Oh I think I have just the two guys to take that on.

Now lets see if any nascar guys got the balls to hang with these two!

Yeah, I’ve seen bot those videos before. But they’re only getting an hour on the track to get out and do their thing (at Bristol). And there’s no “Late Models” listed as entries.

Too BAD!!!

ABYSS64 WOW!!! Those cars are COOL!!! Wants the longest track they race on? I know when we had the Dirt Late Model at CCMP it was the FASTEST 50 lap Show we ever had. All GREEN no rear views and three wide RACEN (SIDEWAYS!!!) !!! Ken Kenny had GREAT a idea bring the dirt to the asphalt. I bet the ones with the side force bodies would even be wilder to watch. How much faster are they than the Dirt Lates we have in Florida?

Them cars up north are pretty much only limited by how much horsepowere you can lay down. I think it’s annual event up in K’zoo called “The Call of the Wild”. Pretty much anything goes to try and break the all-time track record there. I think about the only rule is that it has to be a full-bodied car, no open-wheelers.

Interestingly, Volusia ran way faster than the Bristol record during speedweeks with the 410’s. I think they were 12.5 or so and 145 avg. Pretty crazy that with all that banking they are still slower…

Well, we’ll see when those SuperModifieds hit Bristol next week  I know a LOT of tracks claim to be “the world’s fastest half mile” (Winchester was one of 'em). But we’ll see after next week.

That is correct Jimmy, I’ve seen it in person, it is insane!

Those things are insane Bobby, I remember the dirt cars with those huge sign boards on them, they really never lift out of the throttle, just drag the brake a bit to set it for the corner and hold’er wide open!!!

and if we had them here would people come to watch makes me wonder they are sure fun to build

If Dale Earnhardt Jr. is NASCAR’s favourite son, then Kyle Busch is the “bad boy” all the fans love to hate. Despite his successes in Sprint Car, Nationwide and Camping World Truck, he’s the driver the crowds seem to love to jeer rather than cheer.

But as Kyle explained during a lengthy interview at the weekend on SPEED TV’s Wind Tunnel programme at the weekend, he has big plans for both himself and for his self-branded team, which has just signed up Kimi Raikkonen for a series of Camping World Truck Series races this year. Both Kyle and Kimi seem to share a vision that this could be the start of a greater endeavour.
