Answers to ones not solved:
Red Carr - Al Fini
Les Ley - Harry Dominick. Was killed at Riverside Park Speedway while driving Beebe’s Mighty M-6
“The Racin’ Mason” - Jeff Stevens
“The Outlaw” - Ted Chalmers because he always wore black.
Jim Cash - Jim Ashe
“Punky” - Howard “Punky” Caron was one of the most exciting racers you could ever watch Never a dull moment when he was on the track.
“King Cambo” - Johnny Cambino
Perk Brown - Jack Thomasson
Jacques Martin - Jack Reinhardt
Johnny Lobo - John Lobudek
Sal Dee- Salvatore DeLucia
Billy Billy - Bill Carlbert, Jr. who races at a number of Central Florida Speedways. Just saw him this past Saturday at Showtime Speedway. Man can he drive the wheels off a race car. His nickname should be “Relentless”
“Barn Rat” - Bob Devaney
“Wild Bill” - Bill Greco
“The Flying Greek” - Johnny Georgiades
“Spud” - Alfred “Spud” Lecuyer
To put a reverse spin on this topic there was a famous driver who later settled in Florida and had an automotive connection with race tracks who would go to fist city with those who called him “chief”.
Have to think about the question for awhile. Just wanted to let you know that the memory wheel keeps turning. I watched Pete Corey and Bill Wimble have many battles at the Stafford half miler when it was dirt, prob the mid sixties. Seems as though Jeep Hebert always ran third to these two guys. Great racing.
Long before Mike Duval, Todd Gibson was the Flintstone Flyer. Todd had that nickname in the 1960’s, painted on the side of his super modified roadsters.
Do you remember the original “Jalopy King” at Riverside. ? (Tuesday night programs.)
To all others; How about the Flintstone Flyer ?[/QUOTE]
You are 100% correct about Jocko’s real first name being Chauncey. Guess if my real first name was Chauncey I’d rather be known as Jocko too.
Jap was Tony or as you said Anthony.
I use to go to the races at Riverside quite often on Tuesdays for the jalopy races with my dad. I was a little squirt back then Very good racing with many of the drivers being the same ones who raced at West Haven Speedway (Savin Rock) on Saturday nights. There were a lot of great drivers who moved up to become quite successful modified drivers. Names that come to mind are Bill Greco, Dan Galullo, Lou Carangelo, Charlie Centinaro, Danny Gaudiosi, Johnny Cambino, Lou Toro, Jimmy Cash, Jap Membrino, and Tony Mordino to name some of the really prominent drivers.
Johnny Cambino used to be called “King Cambo” so I’ll go with him as “Jalopy King”. If you are talking about original, it may have been before my time and I’d never be able to guess.
As for “The Flinestone Flyer” that was none other than Mike Duval who was quite the terror in dirt late model racing in his day with the F-1. He traveled just about everywhere and won just about everywhere.
Alan “Rags” Carter
Rufus Parnell “Parnelli” Jones
Mert “Socks” Hulbert
Bruce “Pee Wee” Griffin
Fred "Fuzzy"Baer
Donald “Dutch” Hoag
David “Silver Fox” Pearson
Just wondering why no one has mentioned “Mr Excitement”. One of the top five late model drivers in my opinion. If Jimmy Cope was there it was a good race.
Hey Mr. Berti, we must have been there at the same time. The Jalopy King I was looking for was Lenny Ransome in the Riiska yellow X. Always in a battle with Galulu, Gaudiosi and the remainder of the names you provided. Never got to Savin Rock, although my Dad used to go there frequently. When I went to Riverside on Tuesday it was usually a combo of Riverside & Plainville jalopies. Tom Gallant a fantastic announcer. great shows.
Few more nicknames;
