I want to thank all you guys that post the old race car pictures on here, it is so cool to see how our sport looked back in the day.
Great pics Dave. Those were the days when racing was exciting to me. Looking at Will’s super it’s a wonder anyone survived a hard crash with the lack of safety equipment, especially at West Palm. billy
It kind of looks like:

Back in the day, if you had any kind of motor, a set of rails, a some sort of body, and a couple of days, you had a race car.
How cool was that?
Meet most of these drives this weekend…Sat. Nov.10 10am-2pm Old Thunderbowl Speedway location Valdosta Ga.
One thing that stands out in these pictures, are the ‘homemade’ headers, each set is unique. Kinda miss that ‘backyard engineering’ from back in the day.
The first Cagle car exemplifies the word primitive. To race a car like that at West Palm took very big cajones. Their driving suit usually consisted of jeans and levis or khakis and a t-shirt. The helmet was open faced and may have been re-inforced leather if the driver was old enough. Like the headers the other thing that amazes was the speed and handling that was achieved with tires so narrow and of such a hard compound. We should all pause a minute to remember the men of the good old days and what they meant to our sport.
Thank you for the pictures. The ones from Jax. bring back many memories.
