That’s how you attract a big field of top quality cars. The Oxford 250 is a pretty special race, so the purse should be higher. But all of the Florida special shows ( Governors Cup, Snowball, Triple Crown ) should match those numbers or at least come close.
And i’m betting that payout doesn’t rely on front or back injector money, i’ll bet it comes from sponsor participation.

I know the main sponsor of the event is TD Bank. Has been since a long time, 10 years or so. To which extend it pays, only the 2 men in the room while signing the contract know the exact amount.

I wonder how the switch from ACT rules (Perimiter frame Crate motor cars) to PASS rules (Super Late Models) will affect car counts. I went in '07 and there were over 100 cars trying to qualify. And every position is the main is determined by HEATS! The main? 250 green flag laps! It was truly one of the two most amazing things I have ever witnessed in short track racing (the other being 100 lap Modified night at Bowman-Gray).

97 to be exact:

From oxford 250 web site section:

2007 - Roger Dodger
“Rocket” Roger Brown tops a staggering field of 97 entries to win the first TD Bank 250 under the late model rules package.

That has been one of the thrills of the Oxford 250 from the beginning. Luck of the draw heat races (usually about 4-6 of them), only the top few get in from there. Then, there are the consi races, that get a few of the fastest cars into the feature (but didn’t draw well in their heat) into the line-up.

Just getting IN the 250 is a win for some teams.

They don’t just let one quick lap on the clocks allow you to sit on the pole here. Everyone RACES their way in, most are gonna have to come from behind to do it, and it’s some of the best racing (traditionally) in the country.

That is the kick of the whole thing. Heat races are often better to watch than the 250 itself. Lots of action. When this is your last chance to make the 250 and coming out of 4, you are right up the back bumper of the last car that will qualify, there is a tendency of having THAT CAR going around and never make it to the checkered flag. Fair? Nope…But in order to win the 250, you first have to make it in!!!Many many great stories on that race.

Damn Andre, you’re tough! O.K., there were 97. I lost count there were so many! Public School education and I ran out of toes. All I know is that it was amazing. Every heat, consi and last chance race had incredible action matching the feature. What’s cool is that Oxford is two groove and has no walls in the corners. Push it too far and you just go into the sand trap. No wrecked cars, no lengthy yellows. I think all 97 cars went home in one piece for the most part. Just hoping the change from ACT to PASS rules fields nearly as many cars. Man, I wish I could go…

Purse

yah well florida pays 3000 to win with a 100 entry fee and low car counts.

No No No!!! Don’t take it badly, it was just to back you up.

The car count this year will be more around 60 I would say. Since the ACT type Late Model were ask to vacant the place to make room for Super Late Model, ACT direction decided to throw a major event in Plattsburg same day, same time with a $140,000 purse and $25,000 to win.

So, many guys that would have made both shows if they would be on differents dates, now they have to choose, Crate Late Model with ACT at Plattsburg or Super Late Model with PASS at Oxford.

The ones that will loose the most in that ego game will be the race fans…again

qualifying procedures

how they make it into the field:

Forty cars on a third-mile.

Can you imagine even that many Super Late Models even showing up for a big show in Florida any more?

As of last night

Oxford had 66 Super Late Models

And

Plattsburg had 45 ACT Crate Late Models.

Oxford should gain some more today, coming from neigbouring tracks that were racing weekly shows last night.
