WOW… looks like a great show… decent car counts overall (compared to what we are seeing around Florida)… looks like I missed a good one @ Citrus … OSF

Yes you did OSF. Pretty good SLM race and car counts. Nothing lame about last night. Good job Citrus!!
-JIM-

85 cars for 11 classes? That’s less than an 8 car per class average. It looks like the Late Models had a reasonable turn out for Florida, but I wouldn’t call any of the others very stellar. Seriously, 11 freaking classes of racing in one night. Cut the number of classes and you’ll have more drivers who will race in those divisions. If you had 5 classes, with those 85 drivers, that would be a 17 car average. That’s not a great car count, but for Florida it would be freaking exceptional. I know I’ve said this before and nothing happens, but I hate to see, when race fans like you Bob, accept mediocre racing and consider it decent. BTW, this isn’t a slam on Citrus. I believe they have one of the best asphalt shows on the peninsula. But all of Florida needs to eliminate some classes or merge them. All the different classes kill the overall racing program. It may help the back gate but it kills the front gate.

Hey Wingo, I was there and feel I got my moneys’ worth. A features only night and done by curfew. The figure 8 race was close at times, but there seemed to be an invisable ‘STOP’ sign out there.

VERY pissed about one thing though. Kimberly Kuhn and her husband Rick brought an extra car for Kim to drive in the powder puff race. Kim works at the track in the pit area and gets in as an employee, however they told her she would have to buy a pit pass to drive in the race… The powder puff is a trophy only race and a crowd pleaser. The Kuhns allowed another driver, whose car broke in the feature, use their car for the powder puff… she already had a pit pass…
Not a great way to treat your employees in a once a year race and decide at the last minute to charge her to race in it…

Wing Wing Wing… I have learned over the years, it’s not the number of cars in a race… in the race in the cars…some of the best races I have seen had a low car count… but they “Raced” their butts off (no follow the leader crap)… I did state “Overall” in my post… I think any track that can pull 85 cars is capable of putting on a good show… a lot of tracks have trouble getting that many cars…Hell, if Citrus didn’t drop kick that employee like they did, they would have had 86 cars… (they missed the boat on that… the more cars - the more the fans get their race fix)… dumb move for sure…
Other than that…Citrus has it going on ! ! !.. all tracks should think…“What’s best for the fan’s” before they decide what decisions they make… it’s not all about the ole dollar… OSF
P.S. If that race satisfied that ole crabby ass Higginbottomorsumtin, they did a good thing… cause he ain’t neber satisfied…

11 of the 14 Hornets were from Showtime because they were closed.

You guys have low standards. If you’ve never seen the good, you never miss it. LOL Seriously, features only? Only two classes with more than 10 cars? Reread my post. It wasn’t a slam against Citrus. It’s a slam against the number of different classes and small fields that some Florida fans seem to accept as sufficient. There’s a reason people from other parts of the country don’t care for Florida racing. With all the retired people from other parts of the country, many of who are life long race fans, the stands should be full at every track. Why don’t these fans come? There are several reasons but one is quality of the show. I really don’t want you all thinking I’m just bashing Florida racing. I’d just like to draw your attention to what I consider to be a problem with it. It’s a problem that could be fixed. There are many ways it could be done without actually eliminating classes throughout the state. You could run some classes regularly at a couple tracks, while not running them at all, at the others. Those tracks could run other classes regularly. But each track should try to keep to 5 classes or less, on a weekly basis. You could run split seasons. Some tracks could run certain classes during the early season and then switch for a second season. Rather than have every track racing the same classes every Saturday night, you have 1/2 the tracks competing for the car counts. Car counts would improve at all tracks. I’m just saying. It might take some cooperation from track owners and we know how well that works in Florida, but now there are a bunch of new owners and there may be no better time to get them to work together. I’m not just complaining for the sake of complaining, I’m actually offering a few ideas to improve things.

Wingy, I remember going to the Governors Cup race 10 years ago… It was FREEZING that night and the stands were packed.
2 weeks ago at the Cup, the weather was perfect, only 2 classes, and the stands were 1/2 empty.
What does that say to your theroy??

Absolutely nothing. That’s not a Saturday night regular program.

SMH

Jim, I think you might need some glasses. LOL. Stands at the Governor’s Cup 1/2 full??? Are you thinking of Friday night maybe??? It looked better than 80% full to me. I was at the Governor’s Cup 5 years ago, 2 classes and there was a surprisingly small crowd. Anywho, I have to agree with Winger here. There’s just way too many classes in FL and that dilutes the fields you see in each class. On this night Supers had a good car count. Mod Mini’s 10 is just O.K… That class always leaves me scratching my head? For the money spent on a Mod Mini you could have a decent Sportsman car and not have to have a 4 cyl engine turning a bazillion R.P.M.'s that inevitably go KABLOOEY!!! Why do we need Street Stocks and Pure Stocks? Wouldn’t one full size stock bodied class with 17 cars have been a better show? Give a healthy weight break to the lower powered cars. Do we need Pro Hornets, Beginner Hornets AND Mini Stocks??? That would have been a 29 car, crowd pleasing wild-ass race. Once again, even 'em up with the rules. Legends should only run special events that pay well or National Points to draw BIG fields and don’t get me started on Bandeleros. Winger is right, a 4 or 5 division show with BIG car counts in each would have been a much better show, IMHO. I know the way things are that small car counts are just sometimes a reality today, but having umpteen classes of race cars doesn’t help. On another note, everyone always whines about low purses. Well, if your a track owner it’s kinda hard to pay a big purse to a 7 car field. With less classes and more cars in each class the purses wouldn’t have to be paid out so top heavy and you could actually race for more to win and still have a better payout all the way back. Winger’s right, with all the turnover in ownership there is no better time to look at this than now…

The past Gov. Cup races I remember had the stands packed from turn 4 to turn 1. This last race was full in the mains stands under the tower, but sparce in the older wooden stands. That’s what I was referring to.
Dont’t need glasses, except when I drive… lol

Racing in Fl.?

First off I’m orig. from N.J. where I lived 50 miles from Middletown, N.Y., Nazareth, PA., and Flemington, N.J. every Sat. or Sunday there were 2 classes, Mods and small block Sportsmen, 50 mods. and 90-100 spts., enough for a great night of racing, but as things have changed and all racing has to compete with other forms of entertainment for their bucks, it is what it is. I usually go to dirt shows with sprints, Bubba’s, Volusia. But I did go to the G. Cup race on Thurs. night and it was as good as I’ve seen in a while, I also was at C. County last Sun. night , and I thought the show was very good. Also I was leaving the parking lot at 9:03 pm., and home by 11:30, in Palm Coast. IMHO, the worst part of Fl. racing is that so many tracks all need to run on the same night, thereby dividing up both cars and spectators. Even the Kart racing tracks run on alternate Saturdays.

Agree 1000%!! Florida paved racing is infected with too-many-class-itis. 85 cars is 3 classes, maybe 4 tops. And all too often on pavement there is one class of race cars followed by 9 classes of various bombers. I think part of it is the “everyone gets a trophy” mentality. Everyone has a better chance of winning against 7 cars than 25.
