"Tires Ain't Pretty" - Sam Behr Passes

I know it’s not race related but most folks in Central Florida remember Sam Behr… spokesman for Allied Discount Tires… He was a really cool guy…

From the Orlando Sentinel:

Sam Behr, age 86, died Saturday, November 16, 2013, in his home in New Smyrna Beach. Sam was born April 23, 1927 in Talledega, AL. Sam played football at the University of Maryland and scored the first touchdown ever for Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. Sam was in the military and served at Elmore Air Force Base in Alaska, where he served as athletic director and received football help from Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. Sam owned his own business, Behr Shoe Center, on Church Street, Orlando, for over 50 years. Behr Shoe Center was known to be able to “fit any human.” Sam was also well-known as a spokesman for Allied Discount Tires and was famous for his many humorous commercials and his tagline of “Tires ain’t pretty.” Sam was also a color analyst for Orlando’s USFL football team and was an avid Orlando Magic fan. Sam was a fabulous golfer, shooting his age when he was 74, and also a Bridge Life Master. Sam was the life of the party and anyone who knew Sam knew he was a man of great wit, honesty, and had the ability to make you feel you were one of his best friends. Sam also loved to dance with his wife, Joanne, and loved to sing all the old-time favorites. Sam is survived by his wife, Joanne, his son, Jeff of New Smyrna Beach, son, Phillip of Fresno, CA, daughter, Sheri Gray of Denver, CO, daughter, Mayme Paul of Orlando, FL, son, George of Merritt Island, FL, daughter, Bette Jo Foster of Palm Harbor, FL, and daughter Angie M. I grew up knowing Mr. Behr because Mom and I went to downtown Orlando at least twice a week to make bank deposits for Dad or to shop. We always stopped in McCoy’s or Woolworth’s to have a bite to eat. Mr. Behr usually was at one of them and would always treat me to french fries or a milkshake. And we did shop at his shoe store too.

defently an icon and character of this town before the disney era. Loved his comericals and his shoe store.

I dated his neice a long time ago…I met him and had dinner with him a few times…he was a funny dude and very nice guy

RIP Sam
