I can’t find in Desoto’s new rules or New Smyrna’s new rules anything about Bumpstops. Are they legal ? Does the shock claim rule include the bump stops ? I want them if they are legal, but I don’t want to race against the chosen few. And sportsman cars should not be allowed to use a chip, it is traction control for dummies , hit the chip let off and so forth you get the idea, consistency and your entry should be controlled by your right foot / brain not the chip!!! And before you say I’m protecting my crate motor, if that was the case you would change the gear and not turn it that many rpms in the first place because of the cam that is supposed to be in it. oh yeah and I’m not allowed Vortec heads but the crate comes with them and a roller cam, AND A 650 4 BARREl !!! You’ve got to be kidding me. So to re-cap— BUMPSTOPS–, TRACTION CONTROL CHIP–,CRATE MOTORS WITH VOTEC HEADS ROLLER CAMS AND 4 BARRELS… Ok fire away, I’m ready Clarke
Sportsmans
Well I hope you’ve taken you’re Meds by the time this thread gets rolling.

Yes all very good questions by the way.
I find it amusing when people complain about the GM 602 Crate Motor that the Sportsman use. When built to the letter of the rules a built motor can make 50 more H.P. than a Crate and a Crate has to use about 50 points less gear than a built motor, yet some people feel they have some kind of advantage! If you feel they have an advantage, buy one! $3200 delivered to your door brand new! And, unlike a built motor, you can get three or four seasons out of 'em before they need a build. BTW, they DO NOT have roller cams in them, a flat tappet hydraulic cam is in them. Actually, I think the chip should be MANDATED for the Crate. If you can twist that sucker over 6300 R.P.M. for an extended period of time and it doesn’t get valve float and go KABLOOEY all over the racetrack, then YOU ARE CHEATING. If you want the answers that will matter I would go straight to the source. From the NSS website: “Should you have ANY questions or concerns regarding the rules herein, you may contact Ricky Brooks -Competition Director at 850-324-6821.” and from the Desoto website, “If you have any questions or problems, feel free to contact the Speedway Office…Call 941-748-3171 during regular business hours for information.”
And on top of that at and u have to run the pan that comes on the 602 so now about the lowest u can get the motor is 14" where the built motor has no pan rule. And your being modest when u say 50 no more.
NSS does not allow bump stops. A legal crate motor with a 650 seems to do just fine at NSS and I don’t know of any NSS sportsman cars that chip out every lap.
Hey Williston, had all my meds out of the way and was ready, thanks souk45 for the reply. So Garrity you mean to tell me that the guys that are spending that kind of money on ignitions and shocks and who knows what are settling for “50” less horsepower? Its about AIR !!! CFMMMMMMM’S with the 4 barrel… Especialy useful at New Smryna or Lake City… I’m not yet one of your flock yet, keep trying to convince me to save my money… this is to fishy from a racers point of view about spending and speed you know what I mean jelly bean ??
ive have diven 4 sportsman, 3 of them had crate motors and 1 with a built motor. The crate motors in no way have any kind of performance advantage.
Don’t let what others spend keep you from having a great time! I’ve always ran with about a fourth of what everyone else has and have always had a great time. The less you spend the longer you will be able to play.
Great point Mike (or is it Adam). If 25 guys thought the same as you, car counts might not be a problem.
I’ve always thought that the seat of the worst car on track, was having more fun than the guy with the best seat in the stands.
Cc, air does help, but so does higher compression, a bigger cam, roller rockers, etc. that the open motor has an advantage with. Besides the 4 bbl has only 150 cfm more than the 2 bbl. Maybe these guys have extra money because they are not plunking down 3 grand every year to have their open motor refreshened? No matter what, somebody will always be spending more money than a class justifies in any division. Fortunately setting your car up correctly and driving well can cut into that advantage. Just do the best you can with what you’ve got. BTW, I’m not looking for a flock to preach to in order to talk people into the crate, run what you like. But it is a lower cost, lower maintenance option that goes a long way to helping car counts. I’m not trying to talk you into buying one, but you’re the one complaining that this lower cost engine package has some kind of advantage. If you feel its better, then buy one!
I have been to as many races as most anyone and the biggest motor in not the one that wins the races.
The winner is the one with the best car, driver and a little luck.
Stop looking for the reason not to go to the races and start looking foor more reasons to go have some fun.
If ur not having fun at the races change something or go fishing.
If you go fishing the fish aren’t cheating to stay of ur hook and the other fisherman will still have more money in there boats…The payoff is worst there also…
I fish every week
Gas in truck $25
Gas in boat $60
Fish cost $40 a lb in my boat.
Just have fun racing fishing golfing or whatever u do.

Great point, Don.
I’m not begrudging you guys your engine, just trying to make a point. I have 2 or 3 of those 1 piece rear main, stock, dish piston, with stock vortec heads that I could re-ring and put your intake on , take the roller cam and lifters out and put a .450 lift hyd. back in for less than a Thousand Dollars, I’m sure I’m not the only one. but as soon as someone saw my valve covers and no seal bolts I’m out. And at tracks that do allow these abundant heads you have to have a 2 barrel. Even though they are all teched and torn down the same now. If I want to take a knife to a gun fight just for fun I should be allowed. All because I didn’t buy it from the Chevrolet place. I think New Smyrna is the only one that says NO Vortec, but it’s ok if you have a 602 and then you get a 4 barrel… I know I’m going in circles now, frustration is setting in , but at tracks other than Lake City and New Smyrna I would rather have my 2 barrel. Handling down the strait away at those 2 places makes a difference.
