Supermodified Racing

Was on a northern race car site and seen a post saying that MAVTV has a show at 4:00 and I believe 7:00 tonight about supermodified racing from up north. I’m from Ohio and if you never seen a super you got to watch this show, these cars are bad ass. Just wanted to share if anyone is interested…

re: bad-a

They are indeed. They used to run at volusia when it was paved and although it is hard to describe, they stirred a sense of excitement and fear within, they were so fast.

I think they ran down in south Florida back in the day, but I do not recall where…

Sorry, I just looked on TV guide and no supermodifieds on TV now here. Sorry

I have watched them on MavTV before - and it is cool to see them, but it doesnt do justice to seeing them in person - sights/sounds etc they are soo fast in person it is something you have to see.

Like OS said - when they ran at VSP a while back they were wicked fast - though the WoO is probably just as fast on dirt there.

Bubba, the sprints ARE fast, but the supermods could pass them like they were tied to a tree stump.

From oswegospeedway.com

Veteran Indycar driver and team owner, who raced supermodifieds at Oswego and who owns two Xtreme sprint teams, weighs in on the debate.

“The sprint cars have broken every track record the supermodifieds have set at this point,” said Hamilton. “If it were an open competition event, the supers would go faster, there is no doubt about it. However, with the weight rules, the lighter sprint cars definitely have an advantage, and you can hang them out a bit more in time trials as compared to a supermodified.”

BUT I do love the supermods. I don’t get to see them often, so it is always a treat. They have that exotic appearance…wow. The best part of Oswego is the ATMOSPHERE. Every week is a big event, and the fans in the stands are rabid.

“If it were an open competition event, the supers would go faster, there is no doubt about it…”--Boneman

That about says it all.

Look, Sprint cars are upright with the driver over the drivetrain, like a tractor.

Supers are seriously offset, with a lower CG. Like a mid engine car vs a front engine car, it is an inherently better deal–on asphalt.

All that said, I love the sprint cars, and on dirt it is a different deal. Weight transfer to the RR is the thing, and sprints are king.

I love the sprint cars also on asphalt, and the wingless sprints especially (sorry Bones).

Another difference worth mentioning,is the fact that when I was growing up and watching the supermods up in Ohio is that at that time the supermods burnt alcohol. Not 100% sure but am pretty sure that nowadays they burn racing gas like the superlates and sprints. But man they were a sight to see belching flames and cracking and popping on the alcohol years back.

Sprint cars run methanol

Sprint Car drivers drink alcohol…

From the 2014-2015 Oswego Speedway Rulebook:

“ALL METHANOL used by the supermodifieds at Oswego Speedway will be
purchased from the designated Oswego Speedway fuel supplier, TO BE
ELIGIBLE FOR POINT FUND MONIES”

They also limit them to only(!) 470ci.
