Lets hear it for Volusia and their excellent SUNDAY show! A Saturday Cup race and a Monday holiday made a perfect opportunity for a big win by the track. While New Smyrna was cursed with terrible weather for their Thursday show, Volusia has clear skies on Sunday; it helped no doubt. That was the BIGGEST crowd that I have seen there for years. I bet the track was very pleased.
With the understanding that I missed a few heats and the last feature, here are some observations from my night.
I counted 87 cars in 4 classes, including 37 thunder stocks. The payouts were healthy too, and the best part…I didn’t see a single car go off on the hook. It is amazing when compared with the destruction that generally goes on at a pavement track.
Good racin’ too. The late models were competitive, and had a thrilling final lap.
Suggestion: there were too many heats. If there are 18 cars in a class, split them into 2 heats, not 3. I had a long, hot day, and left 5 hours into the show. It would be easier on the competitors, employees and fans to shorten up the prelims a bit.
It is a shame I missed the Thunder stock feature; I am sure it was excellent.
