The King of Southern Modifieds has been dethroned. Junior Miller has decided to scale back on his schedule and vacated the Riggs Racing ride.
However on the horizon is the Prince Andy Seuss of northern New York.
This combination of Riggs Racing and Seuss will have a huge impact in the Whelen Southern Modified Tour this season.
Riggs has had serious contending cars year in and year out for years.
Seuss had run selected races last year on the tour in a family backed and operated car.
In fact Seuss won a Tour race last year at Nashville.
If may take a few races for them to learn to gel but look for Andy Seuss to be a contender for the title come season end of the Whelen Southern Modified Tour. He already has the respect of drivers like Miller, Burt Myers and Tim Brown, all who have won races last year. In fact Miller nominated Seuss for the ride.
Riggs Racing is a very family oriented team out of Martinsville Va. His father David, has built engines and cars for years going up and down the eastern seaboard racing taking his wife Margaret, with them. Jeff Riggs has his daughter Jessica scoring for the team.
Jeff Riggs selected Seuss because he comes from a family oriented team as well.
“We had several very good drivers come to us looking for our ride, however we selected Andy because of his family background” says Riggs.
At the press conference, held at the historic Bowman Gray Stadium, Seuss had his father and sister with him during the whole conference.
Jeff Riggs has high hopes for Seuss this coming season. “We would like to and feel like Andy could win a race this year” he says.
The new team plans to run the Whelen Southern Modified Tour this year, however Seuss would love to run some northern races as well.
“I don’t know about that” says Riggs. “We will have to wait and see how it plays out.”
One thing for sure is that Riggs will not run the weekly schedule this year at Bowman Gray, though Seuss would love to jump in a car if he can find a ride.
“We have had our share of racing at the stadium but we are just going to run the Tour races. We will be here for the Advance Auto Parts 199 in August but other than that Andy is on his own over here” says Riggs.
Riggs had only praise for Miller who still plans to run at the stadium this year in cars provided by Puddin Swisher. Riggs went on to say that with Miller they won more races than any other driver they fielded cars for.
Its not that often that you see teams split up and still be amicable. But because of the family orientation of Riggs and Miller, you have to agree with them.
Its a win, win situation for the two. Miller gets to scale back and run at Bowman Gray, while Riggs still gets to run the Tour with a new up and coming driver that has already visited victory lane.
Advance Auto Parts is very happy with the new combination and will still sponsor the team after having been with this team for years.
