I purchased a Lefthander SLM complete with a Tesar Engineering 9:1 engine with the 4412 2bbl. carb. from a gentleman in Charlotte back in 2010. He had the engine built in 2006 by Tesar. I contacted Tesar to get the dyno info and specs. Mike Tesar was very helpful, and told me the engine made 540hp with the 2bbl carb, and cost $35,000. It made it’s power at high rpm, 8400rpm+ if IIRC. I ran the car in about 10 events between 2011 and 2012. I don’t have a huge racing budget, doing it out of my pocket, and I was worried about the engine cost. If I blew it up, I could not afford to replace it, so I decided to sell the car while it was in good shape. I guess I didn’t do enough research, because if I would have known that I could buy a comparable engine for half of what the 9:1 cost, I would have probably kept racing it. That is really great that they have a configuration that is competitive for a relatively reasonable cost.
On the ‘Tech’ side of the SPEC Engine Program…
I may be way off, but if my memory serves me correctly, if a SPEC Engine was to be checked, it was sent to a different ‘approved’ Engine Builder than the one who originally built it, to be torn down and checked/re-sealed… So if I was running a Progressive Spec Motor and it needed to be gone through for Tech or a protest of some sort, it would be pulled and sent to one of the other Engine builders to be gone through and a new ‘SPEC’ Engine would be put in, in it’s place.
Since the ‘approved’ Engine builders all know exactly what is supposed to be under the seals, it is kind of a ‘checks and balances’ since you couldn’t ‘Tech’ your own motor.
Plus I think someone mentioned earlier there was some kind of a ‘claim’ rule for SPEC Engines…
Again, I could be wrong, but that was always my understanding.
…
.
There is also a bond that the approved builders had to post that they would forfeit if one of their sealed engines was found to be cheated up.
I don’t remember how much but it was substantial. Seems to me any builder willing to post the bond and be approved by the tracks or Ricky Brooks should be able to build these motors.
It’s hard to keep from laughing while reading this thread. And just try explaining the Florida SPEC engine rules to someone. You’d have them laughing in no time.
Only a special club of 3 engine builders in the entire state can build these engines.
They have to put up money to be in the special club.
No one but the individual engine builder can know what’s in the engine.
Now we find that the engines can’t even be inspected in tech.
The engines must be removed and hauled to one of the 3 engine builders.
He’s going to be totally unbiased in his findings about his competitors engine.
And it’s up to him, not the tech guy, if the engine is legal.
The engine is then re-assembled with the secret seals and trucked back to the racer.
Man, you couldn’t make this stuff up.
Or…the specs for these engines could be given out to anyone that wants them. Any engine builder anywhere could build these " low cost alternative " engines. And the engines could be checked in regular tech at any track.
The special seals could be given to the crate engine racers. They go through a lot of them. LOL

Sounds reasonable to me.
Anyone know generally which engines run best?
Maybe we should take a poll (lol)?
High dollar built 9:1?
SPEC?
Homebuilt 11:1?
Or somehow they all shake out the same?
Choice 3 looks fast, but…
I think 3 yrs ago gov cup ricky pulled magunigal spec motor and David Rogers fl spec motor tore both motors down to the block in the open so everybody could see should have been there and you could have seem what was in the motors. I thunk it was Kyle Larson motor.
If you don’t like the spec motor and don’t want to race against them change classes. I hate rules but rules are geared for the betterment of the sport not individuals.
I know RB took several cars to an At The Wheels Dyno near the track at least once in an effort to understand/check the HP differences last year or the year before. This may be part of the protest rules, but I’m not sure, and I imagine he’s probably done it more than the one time that I know about.
It might seem silly to you Matt and you might find it funny, but contrary to what you think the people that own these cars and the tracks have a whole lot of time, effort, money and love invested and they take it very seriously and Asphalt SLM racing is in pretty decent shape compared to where it was. It sounds to me like there’s quite a few options. I was at every race at 5 Flags last year, plus one at Opp, and one at Mobile (plus a couple of dirt tracks) and I watched the World Series at NSS on Speed51 and it seems to me Late Model racing is in fine hands at the moment.

Well there we have it!!! That wasn’t so difficult. Thanks.
That parts list doesn’t look like anything that any engine builder couldn’t handle. Most back yard engine builders too. So why the ultra exclusive club? All the engine builders in Florida left out so 3 guys could monopolize the engine building.
I notice that the engines CAN be torn down and inspected on the spot. That certainly makes more sense. Or did that clause get added in the last couple of days?
That is from the FAST link circa 2010
The link to the Spec motor rules was posted here on this thread Tuesday by exnyer.
I noticed that, but those rules are from 2010 or so. I thought Don said these Florida SPEC engines started back around 2000 or so. Or are there 2 sets of rules?
No these parts lists are from Don and Progressive from about 2001. They have not changed. I got them from the post with the link but they are the same. Our first one was in 2003.
The “Spec” motor program was actually started in 1993 by SUPR. Then around 2000 the “S.E.A.L.” engine program reached out to a few of the major super late model engine builders in the country to join their alliance. Some of the builders join their alliance and some of the builders broke away on their own with the specs from the seal program. That is where the Florida spec engine was arrived from. Here’s a little tidbit on who the real originator of the super late model spec engine was. Several builders claim to have started this program but this was the originator.
I was trying to find some info on the Ford sealed engine and this was all I could find. It’s a Ford 351 block with the stroker crank
Does anyone know if the weight is the same for each choice?
yes
the total weight and left side is the same for all engine choices
a man of few words, but they seem to be important ones…
