Very interesting. Sucks I never got to see a race there, drove by quite a few times going up to Pensacola to see friends in my early 20s as I always enjoy stopping in to see tracks. I guess it’s better to see it revived and changed than completely removed from the racing world. How will this affect North Florida Speedway though right up the street?
Crap news. One of my favorite tracks in FL. One that actually had character. Should be real succesful as a dirt track with North Florida Speedway right next door. LMAO

10.7 miles away, was thinking the same thing, with Ocala also not too far south.
going dirt is a great idea cause there are no dirt tracks around there…
except for the one 10 miles up the road that runs on Saturdays and the one 60 miles south that runs on Fridays
but other than that there are no dirt tracks around south Georgia/north Florida
Last thing we heard was that they were taking bids on re-paving. I’m guessing the price of dirt was a lot better than the price of re-paving.
Gonna cost quite a bit to tear up the old asphalt too though I would assume…
I guess they figured all the pavement guys were committed to Bronson- just look at their car count from last week- no sense in competing against that.
so they decided to try dirt as the other dirt tracks are not doing too well in that area and having another dirt track around can only improve car counts for everyone, right?
Very risky move although a paved track in Lake City has little to draw from except south of there. An earlier person said the only competition was North Florida. That is wrong Putnam Co. has reopened and runs Fridays as does Bubbas. Albany Ga. and Needmore Speedway in Moultrie run alternate Sat. nights. The Columbia Co. fan base is not large enough to support 2 tracks with a meaningful number of fans. Phil and Liz have worked very hard the last several years to improve North Fla. and have built a loyal following in all classes. Competitors can be lured away with money but it would take very deep pockets to change the track and be able to guarantee a much higher purse. If Columbia Co. has a chance I would think it might be running pavement specials but the overall facility is self limiting for even that.
Putnam runs saturday nite.
it will never make it we don’t need any more tracks in FL dirt or asphalt need to fix what they have .
Volusia county, aka barberville, was initially dirt, then paved, and is now dirt again.
Man I miss those supermodifieds in Feb…
Never been over that way but from what I hear, the track is 1/2 mile, has banking, and the facility is nice,If that is all true, once dirt, the track to the north of it and the track to the south of it will have to step it up.
well if I remember right the stands are concrete square poles laid on there side to sit on and the walls around the track and the concrete traffic barrier walls that you would use in on high way construction .
The grandstands there are great, IMO. You can bring a chair and it’s much more comfortable than bleachers. I remember Bert renting plastic chairs for a buck or two and made a killing!
I probably have a million laps on that track and it was about my favorite in the state! Until they put up the concrete barriers around it. I wonder how many cars( and HOBBIES) those walls destroyed… dumbest move ever.
Hate to see it die.
The outside walls are solid concrete, and the inside walls are concrete road dividers. I know because I’ve hit them both, actually moved the turn 2 inside wall about 6 feet once, after bouncing off the outside wall. Turn 1-2 is more narrow than 3-4 and a little banking. Measured the track one day with a survey wheel. Top of bottom groove is 476 feet shy of a 1/2 mile. Run about 10-15 point higher gear than NSS.
Main grandstands are concrete slabs stairstepped into a dirt wall. Wide enough to put a lawn chair and sit in comfort. Regular bleechers at each end…
Great family track. Also has a kiddie playground with swings out of turn 4. Very nice spotter tower too. A/C included.

Dammit Jim. I was hoping it was gonna get fresh blacktop. I had visions of driving into 3 EVEN DEEPER than you could on the worn-out pavement and wondered how much faster the new surface would be on an already very fast track. Let’s hope that they just lay the clay over the old asphalt. That way when the “five dirt tracks within 100 miles” oversaturation fails, Hart can dig up the dirt and bring the old girl back to life! Pipe dream. Sad day…
Well Scott just remember this; the asphalt is still under 14" of dirt at Ocala Speedway… It was in pretty good shape in our last race there in 2007…
As per the story, the track was sold by Mr. Hart…

Yeah, I don’t think he was too impressed with crowd for the doubleheader weekend there this past Nov. I believe they had done radio advertising too. It’s a shame. Boy, they just keep driving you out of all these places, don’t they? Ocala and LCS going to dirt and Bronson’s schizophrenic business model. At least you have a stable home now in Samsula. Good luck, buddy.
