Sportsman Tires

I once read an article on how to use your racing dollars in the most efficient ways.

One of the lessons was this… “Never buy used tires for half price. It costs you both the same amount, but he got the good half”

“…year-old 100 lap 800’s WERE 2 TENTHS QUICKER THAN THE STICKER 800’s!”–SGarrity

How can this be…?

Matt’s “take off” 800s will sell for a premium?!

Well then I’d like to say thank you for helping local racers.

Yeah, Old School, this took us by surprise. Driver’s said they felt more stable too. Not unheard of, with hard Hoosiers, though. Many moons ago I raced a Sportsman-type “Late Model” at Stafford Speedway. Due to repaving and our old tires blistering on the new asphalt, we were switched to the hockey puck Hoosier Commanche. They were ALWAYS quicker the second week on them. In fact, I won a feature on the FIFTH race on them one night in a tough field of 26 cars!

well I think that a few of you don’t want to hear what is going on with the tire test that are going on all over the state buy Hoosher.
Why they didn’t want to test when a few drivers wanted to?
They were trying to get the tire done that they wanted to test. it is a new tire . not the same one from last year. Try to get ur facts right.
Goodyear would change the # with any change and Hoosher tryes to use the same #.
The tire they tested is a 750r and a 800r The left side had some other letter on it.
The sidewall is different than the old tire.
They still might change it more after the test. that is what tire testing is for this time of year.
A few of you could not weight for this to happen and might have done some damage to the outcome.
Jeff is doing it the right way so give him some time to get it right.
There are tire experts form the factory working on this and they don’t need a few “Ill fix it now” racers trying to push them.
They have had 2 test and will do a total of 4 this week.
lets see what they come up with.

Jerry o great one you bring the popcorn.

Scotty when I asked you to call me I was going to give you the info on the construction of the new and old tire. also the rest of the story.

It’s OK Don, I know EVERYTHING that is going down, with who and where. Read it all in the REAL tire thread! Lol

I dunno, am thinking Hoosier wants to sell tires, and if the racers are happy, they will sell more tires. If the tires are cheaper per season there may be more racers buying the tires. Am thinking that is their objective regardless of politics…

Hoosher is a vacuum cleaner, I think.

The problem here from the beginning was Jeff. He was his own worst enemy. A little tranparency and some up front honesty would have made this whole ordeal less of a soap opera and eliminated the drama. When I started the thread and the consensus was that this made a hell of a lot of sense we were told that we better get on the ball since the distributor needed to know pretty rapidly what the tracks tire needs were going to be in 2015, if they expected those needs to be met. It was July. They were in a hurry, not us. I was aware of the demand to know the tire needs early. That’s why I timed my thread when I did. I had been contemplating this for a long time. Critter was informed by Jeff of the new tire being developed and they wanted Patrick to test it and the 800 in early August. Why didn’t Jeff just admit that the new tire wasn’t going to be ready and assure Critter that when it was ready they could test it and still be able to supply everyone with it 2015? The racers were in no hurry. We knew it made sense to implement it in the new year and were fine with that. Then Jeff started in with the broken commitments and telling tales about the 800 being tested here and naming names that upon investigation all turned out to be a crock. That was all unnecessary and after that it was hard to believe anything that came from him. Then in October instead of again being up front and asking NSS to wait for the new tire and assure its availability in 2015, he sent 700s and 800s to test fully knowing he would discredit any testing being done (even though we tested them exactly as he is now testing the new tire). This all could have been avoided. A peculiar way to treat your customer base, for sure. In the end it’s no skin off my back because from early reports the tire experts at Hoosier appear to have come up with a revolutionary compound that grips AND lasts. This new grooved 750 and slick 2040 that Stafford is using seem to be of the same ilk. And thanks Don, for bringing to light that Hoosier revamps compounds under old tire numbers. The 2040 is an old number too. And the old 2040 had a reputation for wearing out real quick, I’m told. I will gladly admit that I was wrong in thinking that it was physically impossible for a grippy tire to also be a long lasting tire. Kudos to the scientists at Hoosier. Proving once again why they are the world’s #1 race tire manufacturers. In the end we will all get what we were looking for. I just wish we could have been spared the drama.

General thought…

It has been my experience that whenever you are dealing with an individual that is difficult, or untruthful, or whatever, that it is easy to get caught up in the aggravation of the moment.

And it is sometimes seemingly hard to understand the “why” behind the problem.

BUT–what you are really looking at is a defense to cover up an insecurity.
Just something to maybe keep in the back of one’s mind. You are really dealing with the deal behind the deal.

You’re welcome. Keep in mind that just buying a ticket to a local race track is helping the local racers. All of us “keyboard racers” have been doing our part by patronizing the tracks.

Of course, and i can’t stress this enough, we’ve NEVER heard the other side of this little drama. Neither Jeff nor Hoosier has ever given their side of things. And i’m betting they have a very different account of what’s been said and what’s been promised. We will very likely never hear from Jeff on all of this, so…

You can’t even make up the stuff that is said on this message board, I haven’t laughed so hard as I have with today’s tire posts. Thanks for the levity, makes me feel not so sick. It does appear that the new 750 that is being tested is making a big impact on the drivers that are testing it. There is no 800R but there was a S800 tested which sounds like the old 800 with a stiff sidewall.

Can’t wait to race on a tire that lasts and has grip, sounds like a no brainer to me. Good job HOOSIER for producing a tire that is the best of both worlds.

What?? I know first hand that’s not true!

IF the Mods, sportsman, trucks and super stocks all ran on the F53 slick tires or the new 2040 slick tire there would be plenty of take offs for the guys that wanted to race on them. Implement the tire softness rule (can’t remember the number) again. One of the issues is that all the classes on 8" tires run different tires. And the current 650/450 is junk.
We ran on take offs for an entire year (bought 4 new tires the entire year) and won 5 or 6 races and a track championship. Yes we soaked the tires to get an extra week or two out of them but they were constantly checked on the track or in tech.
There has been, and will always be guys that buy new tires every week. That is just part of racing. We just found that guy and bought his take offs every week (and not for half of new ones). One year we went and took 8 or 10 sets of take offs from speedweeks. Dial your car in and quit running 30 or 40 laps of practice.
Everyone has a budget to race on and no one has the same budget. The playing field isn’t equal nor should it be. IF you want equal cars to race, go to Lil 500. Some guys are smarter than other guys also. (PT25 being one of them). Some guys work on their cars and some guys just roll it off the trailer every week and never change anything.

Lets Just Race!!!
